I curl up with @davidhepworth’s 1971: Never A Dull Moment.
“There are moments in all creative stories when the right sort of talent meets the right amount of opportunity with just enough money & technology... 1971 was one of those moments” - @davidhepworth (who was 21 in 1971...)
Thrilled to learn that Carole King’s cat on the cover of Tapestry was called Telemachus. (I guess I should already have known that...)
In January 1971, in the same building on Hollywood Boulevard that had once been the home of Charlie Charline Productions, Carole King was recording Tapestry, Joni Mitchell Blue, & Richard & Karen Carpenter Carpenters
“By the autumn of 1971 Carole King had achieved such eminence that Hollywood’s senior cocksman Warren Beatty offered to sleep with her, on the grounds that he was curious to know what it was like to have sex with a pregnant woman.”
“Tapestry was the first huge-selling record of the modern era. It was the first record to carry on selling once it had passed beyond its obvious commercial window. When you look back at lists of the biggest-selling albums of all time, Tapestry is the earliest one to be included.”
