To @AshmoleanMuseum, there to gawp at its new exhibition on Pompeii!
The exhibition - ‘Last Supper In #Pompeii’ - seems in fact not to be about Pompeii, but about the infinitely fascinating topic of Roman attitudes to food & drink. Here, to kick things off, are Bacchus’ #buttocks...
Etruscan duck
Lucanian ricotta: a terracotta model left in a woman’s grave, c. 360 BC
The #Pompeii exhibition at @AshmoleanMuseum features carbonised examples of - among other foods - figs, olives, dates, plums, walnuts, almonds, snails, oysters, mussels, grapes, lentils, fava beans, millet, wheat & spelt.
Pompeian pigs...
Partayyyyy!!!!!! #Pompeii
What a wonderful show. A mix of the celebrated - the sea food mosaic! the Vesuvius mosaic! - & the excitingly unfamiliar. Do get to @AshmoleanMuseum to see it if you possibly can.
