None of this is true.

Far fewer lives are lost to heatwaves in the 2010s than in the 1910s, despite a substantially increased population.

Ditto, the impact of infectious diseases has dropped over the last 30 years.

Agricultural yield has increased.
Mark Maslin is a science denier, a history denier, and a fact denier.
The only obvious effect of heatwaves is that they cause climate change zealots like Maslin to have some kind of mental/emotional breakdown. spiked-online.com/2018/07/31/may…

A long read from 2014 by me on Extinction Rebellion mouthpiece and 'thinker', Rupert Read.

It is a response to Read's angry rant against 'libertarianism', and against the public.

It shows that Read doesn't know what he's talking about.

At all.

And it shows that academics are often the category of person that has the weakest grasp on the world, and convince only themselves that they understand it the best.
At the time, it was hard to understand Read's palpable anger and incoherence.

But a few years later, I stumbled across the answer.

Read had donated ~£50,000 of his own money that year to the Green Party, to support his own election to the European Parliament.

Senior politicians, academic 'experts', civil servants and "civil society" organisations, have convinced themselves that this is their proper role in society.

What does this tell us about climate change?

1. Even if it's true that people don't get enough sleep, the idea that it is for the state to intervene implies a fundamental transformation of the role of government and the relationship between government and people.

Most public health policies imply the same.
2. It doesn't need pointing out that the roles are characterised as 'nanny' and 'child'. Most defences of these policies point to the fact of some people not being able to manage their lives properly, to their cost.

But what this really suggests is a hollowing out of politics.

Even if it were true, it would only hold for a few weeks a year. All of Europe has a winter of some kind. And a spring and autumn.

Moreover, Europe's productivity problems are political, not meteorological. High unemployment in the south has nothing to do with climate change.
More illness? Which diseases? How will they be caused by a such a slight increase? Even the '03 and more recent heatwaves in which tens of thousands are *assumed* to have died do not seem to have shifted death stats. People in Europe are living much longer, healthier lives.

But surely dexeu embarrasses itself with am absolutist hardline reluctance to accept any issue might arise

I think it's important to challenge all pieces of "Known Writing Advice," all those chestnuts of Vital Lore, and to see what they are and what works for you. We all have our own weird fingerprints to imprint upon this thing we do.
I think it IS important to talk about the things you do and the processes you use to write and tell a story and to hold them up and examine them -- share them with others, and listen to their ways of doing things, too.
