I am very sympathetic to this take except for one thing, which is that ... it doesn't really seem like they got that much money out of him?
If the reported allegations are true, then "con artist" isn't really the right description of this couple. It's way weirder than that

I mean, like, they allegedly stole his house for a bit, but it doesn't really seem like that was done for financial reasons. The financial fraud only seems to have been undertaken to enable the general project of torturing their target.
They cost him a huge amount of money, but that was mostly legal fees. They didn't get much of it.
Why anyone would have wanted to do this (allegedly attempting to target more than one man with roughly the same MO), I can't imagine. I doubt it was ideological.

What is odd is that Harvard would drag out an investigation of Professor Hay if the facts are as described. And that could well be ideological.
