Today is the 29th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a statute that is sometimes called the last great civil rights act of the 20th century. medium.com/@SenBobCasey/j…
Last year, the Centers for Disease Control estimated there are over 61 million people with disabilities in the United States.
As with the other great laws, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the ADA was written to rectify discrimination and prejudice against a specific group, in the case of the ADA, those 61 million Americans with disabilities.
One of those Americans is Jean Searle, a Pennsylvanian who lives in Harrisburg. medium.com/@SenBobCasey/j…

My concerns about the President’s conduct have grown over months, particularly as I thoroughly reviewed Special Counsel Mueller’s report. President Trump’s most recent actions with regard to Ukraine have created new urgency to take action

The Trump Administration has gone to great lengths to suppress climate science in order to downplay the threat of climate change. We must act on the serious threat of climate change and that begins with respecting science
This Administration’s failure to promote its own USDA researchers’ climate science hurts our farmers, ranchers and rural communities. Additionally, the reckless relocation of ERS and NIFA is already causing a loss of expertise and a disruption of critical research.

If the Trump Administration actually wants to help the homeless they can begin by reversing the cuts they have proposed to vital programs
The Trump Administration has worked to drastically cut and even eliminate entire federal programs that keep the lowest-income people affordably housed
The Administration has sought to triple rents for the lowest-income subsidized residents and raise rents for all others

Americans also fund much of the global drug industry’s efforts to find new medicines. When European countries put price caps on US drugs they allow their healthcare systems to purchase, drug makers “make up” for profit shortfalls by charging the US healthcare system more.
2. When purchasing drugs, European government-run healthcare systems, like the one in Norway, keep costs down by using a drug’s per quality-adjusted life year, or QALY, measure, which Medicare is barred from using as a threshold to determine coverage. US doesn’t “ration”…

Let’s stop relegating people with disabilities to a single day in the calendar.

Today in #FatStudyGroup, we reading Chs9-10 of Solovay, S. (2000). Tipping the scales of justice. Amherst, New York, USA: Prometheus Books.
In the ninth chapter, Solovay reviews how weight often intersects with other (usually protected) categories, such as gender and/or race. She provides several examples of cases where this has occurred, and how the courts have negotiated the issue.
In the longest chapter in the book, Ch10, Solovay considers whether fat people should find protection under existing disability laws. She begins by noting how contentious this idea is, both in the fat activist community and in the disability community.

Today in #FatStudyGroup, we are reading Chs 7-8 of Solovay, S. (2000). Tipping the scales of justice. Amherst, New York, USA: Prometheus Books.
In chapter seven, Solovay asserts the importance of (and right to) being judged by one’s peers; and yet, fat people can be dismissed from serving on a jury because of their weight in the US.
She argues, "Excluding fat people from juries because of weight is inequitable. It denies fat defendants the Constitution’s guarantee of an impartial jury...It prevents fat people from contributing to the important mechanism of justice because of stereotypes & prejudice” (p. 97).
