I am so impressed with all of you who can Google Baltimore and crime but can’t Google how black people were forciblysegregated there, how the government settled a lawsuit just a few years ago for illegally segregating black people, that white flight/disinvestment led to violence.
That the highest poverty rates in the country are the Deep South states with Republican leadership. One might suspect that you don’t care about the conditions black people live in at all but rather in winning political points and backing a racist. dcicblog.umd.edu/redliningbalti…

So, here it is. If you follow me on here, if you know me in real life, then you know I'm obsessed with the year 1619 & how the start of slavery in America has shaped everything in our society. So, in Feb. I pitched to @NYTmag a project to examine, in this 400th year, the legacy.
@NYTmag What began as an idea to devote an entire issue of @NYTmag to commemorating this tragic 400th anniversary examining the modern-day legacy had turned into a project unlike any other in the history of the @nytimes.
@NYTmag @nytimes On Aug. 18th, @nytimes and @NYTmag will publish an entire issue of the magazine, an entire special section of the magazine, a section of our kids section, and full digital package all dedicated to examining a date as important to this country as the year 1776.

This is damning and makes all the more calculating @NYCMayor’s constant refrain that there’s little he can do about school segregation because housing segregation is so entrenched.
But, also, very predictable. Fair housing groups have along fought residential preferences as maintaining segregation.
But I think of everything I saw in this article this was the most damning. Poor black people are simply choosing to live in areas of concentrated disadvantage, crime, food deserts and low-performing schools because: Segregation is a choice.

for my money, one of the darkest periods in american history. the haynes report in the immediate aftermath counted 38 separate incidents of massed white supremacist attacks against black communities that summer.
the scale of the violence committed against black americans between the end of reconstruction and the civil rights movement is generally under appreciated in the shorthand narrative history of the united states that most people carry around in their heads

A straight "attitude arrest." Black people have to fear beating and arrest simply for respectfully challenging the action of a police ofcr. These Black Codes - which deny Black people full citizenship in interaction w/law enforcement - must end.

It tells us that everything from poor health to fatherlessness, drug use to criminality, education challenges to unhealthy dietary practices, depression to mental health; all of the things White America chalks up to cultural inferiority of black folks may actually be their doing.
The wicked irony of white supremacy. It has traumatized entire ethnic communities for generations w/ its brutality & psychological terrorism & then it looks at the generational impact of its actions & says “look, we were right abt these black/indigenous people. They’re inferior!”
High sugar/fat diets were forced on African slaves. They were given “left over” heavy fatted parts of animals for food (like chittlins) & to compensate they used a lot of sugar to mask taste. Dietary practices past down generationally as well as Diatebes & heart disease....
