Under normal circumstances I am hesitant to drop a Joan Didion comparison, but for @annawiener and her forthcoming "Uncanny Valley" I'm forgoing that caution because it's the most apt comparison I can make. I tore through this book. indiebound.org/book/978037427…
@annawiener In a lot of ways
@annawiener
offers more than Didion in that she's a much more direct participant in what she's chronicling. She's not hanging out looking for a story. She's living her life. There's much more memoir than something like Slouching Towards Bethlehem.
@annawiener The clarity and acuity @annawiener brings to the Silicon Valley scene makes me feel as though I have a much deeper understanding of the dynamics at work there. She doesn't pick villains so much as expose our collective capacity for villainy.
@annawiener The way every company recognized that they were far too loose with everyone's data, but did nothing because everyone else was doing the same thing is chilling. It makes me want to quit all digital spaces immediately.
@annawiener On the other hand, @annawiener has a deep understanding of how we've been seduced by digital spaces and connections. I could gnaw over what Uncanny Valley means for weeks. I want other people to read it so we can talk about it.
@annawiener January release for Uncanny Valley. Mark your calendars. mcdbooks.com/books/uncanny-…
@annawiener FYI, the other author I am hesitant to make comparisons to is Patricia Highsmith, a hesitation I wish more publishers shared because I have been suckered into reading books not close to the Highsmithian standard by people invoking her in the marketing copy.
