I agree with most of the advice to this over-the-top sports dad here with the exception that I recommend he practice not going to his daughter's softball games for awhile. The daughter is ten. slate.com/human-interest…
I was never destined for a college scholarship in anything, but I played travel hockey my whole life, and varsity hockey and lacrosse in HS and the best gift my parents gave me was only showing up to my games occasionally, and practice never.
I have had first-year college student athletes who had been subjected to the parenting like in the letter above and the prize of the scholarship isn't worth much when they get a little distance from their overbearing parents and realize they want to quit their sport.
Seeing 18 year-olds burnt out on their sport because they've been playing it 12 months a year with private coaches, endless travel, and parents desperate to recoup some of the $'s in the form of a scholarship is very sad.
