Can't imagine this. My goal is to have my editor switching between nodding in agreement and thinking, "I never thought of it that way, but he's right." Why would I want them to say, "Why is he talking such dumb shit?" Why would I want to introduce that into my writing practice?
I guess this also speaks to the fact that I trust my editors. I've never seen the process as a battle I'm trying to win. We're playing from the same side of the net.
Not trying to put something over on my editors, and also trusting them means that when they do flag something, they're right 99% of the time.

Reading this excerpt on the recent Bret Stephens column about the book it becomes apparent that, despite lip service to the ideal, these folks have no desire to diversify the elite academic spaces.
Oh, they'll let some women and black and brown people in the gates, but they should know better than to try to change anything once there because prior to their entry, the institution has been engaged in the dogged pursuit of truth, don't you know, and this can't be interrupted.

Working on a seminar I'm leading Friday on the writer's practice and its use in teaching first-year writing and thinking my first slide needs to say "There is no pedagogical fix for systemic problems." Right now, it's implied in the work, but why not make it explicit?
I mean, every writing instructor knows the benefit of one-on-one conferencing, but what does that matter if you have 150 students in a semester?
The Writer's Practice reflects the end run I took to get around the systemic issues with teaching as an adjunct and what I see as the damaging "folklore" of writing instruction, but everything in the book works many times better if the teaching and learning conditions improve.

Please do not fall for this performance. He's distancing himself from white supremacist terrorism so he can continue to help enact white supremacist policies. It's all part of the same system. Dude hasn't offered a sincere thought his whole life.
I feel like we're so starved for politicians who will at least adequately perform the role of "bringing the country together" the bar has sunk below the floor. Ted Cruz is not trying to unite the country anymore than Trump is.
It's a con. That Cruz is trying to run this con is an acknowledgment of the electoral danger of how extreme Trump has gotten, but it isn't a statement of principles because he has none. Until he publicly severs himself from Trump and Trumpism, consider it all for show.

Very few couples have real conversations about finances when they're dating even when it gets serious. We wait for a ring before really talking about money. We're guarded about what we earn and what we spend.
It sounds good to keep your financial details to yourselves and it feels like you're protecting yourself but in many times you're just screwing yourself over over a longer period.

Watching the Immigration Meeting, and you can see everybody in the room realize they can get the President to agree to anything they want as long as they say nice things about him.
It's like when I coached a t-ball team, except there's a dozen coaches and one player.
He seems so happy. This is all he ever wanted. Presiding over a meeting, hearing compliments, saying things, people nodding in agreement. It's what he thought the job would be. That and parades.
