One of my oldest friends runs an educational tutoring company in Chicago. He used The Writer's Practice in a 1-week summer session with some rising 9th graders from at risk neighborhoods. This is some of what they wrote on the final assignment, "Who are you as a writer now?"
"It brought out a writer I didn't know was inside me."
A student for whom writing had become receptive and now it's enjoyable again.
There's dozens of these. I'm very pleased that The Writer's Practice helped bring these experiences about, but the book itself isn't magic. At it's core, it's all about believing that student writers have something meaningful to say about the world. The book just let's them do it
Five 75 minute sessions over one week. That's all it took to shift student perspectives on writing, most importantly, how they view the writing process and their control over it.
More on learning the writing process. Note the use of the word "experiences." When students see the doing and the process as the point, they get it, and they put in more effort, not out of duty, but due to their intrinsic interest.
They were given feedback on their writing, but this is an independent summer program, no grades, and yet students do - by their own accounts - their best work. To say I'm excited about this response is an understatement.
