Oh. So what.
Remind me when the president not coddling or outright encouraging white supremacists is like t-ball where you let the kid take as many swings as he needs and then cheer like crazy when he finally manages to weakly connect on the 87th attempt.
The story “the president actually condemned murderous white supremacists, which marks a clear departure from his usual rhetoric” should be a devastating critique, not some gutless cheer.

Tonight daddy didn’t hit mommy as hard as he usually does, what a hero he is.

The fallacy here is that it’s impossible to be a good person on any level if you are a racist, which completely untrue.

The “good people” on the pro confederate side all support a racist cause, which they should have realized sometime before they started marching with Nazis.
This is what people seem deliberately unwilling to grasp: the problem with “very fine people on both sides” isn’t that none of the people who marched with the Nazis that day can’t be “very fine” in many/most contexts, or good, or generous or kind.

The problem is this: so what.
In the context of the Nazi occupation of Charlottesville, they marched with the Nazis. What else matters?

You take care of your kids? Congrats.

You give to charity? Good for you.

You’re nice to strangers? Hooray.

And so what? People who don’t march with Nazis manage that, too

The reason republicans accuse anyone pointing out the obvious causes to tragedy as “scoring opportunistic political points” because they really do think this is just all a political points game, don’t they.
People weren’t tying the El Paso shooters to trump because he voted for Trump or because he was a registered Republican, they did so because his manifesto, in which he laid out his rationale for his murders, directly mirror the president‘s rhetoric against the people he murdered
People aren’t going to exonerate Republican lawmakers for the Dayton shooting even if the Dayton shooter vote for Democrats, because Republicans have worked for decades to make sure that every killer had the most massacre friendly gun possible.

This is just such offensive horseshit it's almost difficult to know precisely *how* to be offended by it. It creates a gravity from which no shame can escape.

Anything is allowable, anything at all really, except making white people feel uncomfortable about racism for a second.
Trump has spent the last four years—as candidate and as president—sending a clear message, which violent men have often attuned to, and acted upon, most recently this week.

He knew he'd be immediately exonerated if he made the slightest lazy gesture toward decency.

He was right
He knew it because he's a con man, and even a profoundly ignorant con man possesses keen knowledge of whatever it is their mark desires

White America is his mark

And what white America wants is to be innocent

We're willing to believe anything, as long as it keeps us innocent

It's true that everything is political. However, some people's lives are more vulnerable to political whims than others and they are correspondingly more conscious of how politicized their identities are, whether they are black, women, disabled, trans, or what have you.
Ultimately, the aim of progressivism-liberalism is to stop treating politics as a zero sum game where some identities win at the expense of the rest and to work toward a social order where everyone enjoys fairness, equality, safety, and a decent standard of living. Bare minimum.
The American right is explicitly about zero sum politics on behalf of straight cis white men, especially rich white men, and this has necessarily defined the progressive movement as one of other, vulnerable identities and our straight, white, and/or male allies.

I keep seeing this "Great Awakening" map and it's making my brain melt out my ears.

I believe it first appeared on 8chan, but now it's being sold by QAnon grifters and is called "the quintessential red-pill navigational chart for Escaping the Matrix and Returning to Source."
I love conspiracy crap, and some of this clicks for me but I'm totally baffled by most of it, so I'm going to do the responsible thing and dive into every bizarre claim on the map try and decipher it.

A trio of white supremacists, who helped make Portland "Skinhead City" in the 1980s, ended Seraw's life. One of the white supremacists was a metal-head. One was a "street kid." And another was the homecoming king at Grant High School.

Seraw was only 28.

1. I’ve always felt that the term “hate” was problematic for liberals. We hear it all the time: “hate speech,” “hate crime,” or, from today’s editorial in the Times, “The Hate Poisoning America.” But “hate” is morally relative—if liberals allow it to be.
2. Yes, Cesar Sayoc and Robert Bowers are hate-filled, but can’t the same be said of Black Lives Matters, feminism and “The Resistance”? No. BLM didn’t try to assassinate former presidents. Feminists didn’t massacre 11 worshiping Pittsburgh Jews.
3. That won’t stop conservatives in lockstep with President Donald Trump from trying to persuade a majority of Americans, and the news media, to believe their nonsense.
