@RonanMcCrea has an op-Ed in @sundaybusiness today on backstop. @BrigidLaffan
Much to say but I will identify what I think is most problematic about the argument. 1. The use of the word ‘simply’ to suggest that Irish agreement to move border issues to phase 2 of talks is just that-simple. No it is not. @BrigidLaffan
Ireland has deployed its state capacity to get the support of 26
Countries on an existential issue. It would completely undermine Ireland’s standing & EU credibility & we would not be thanked. @BrigidLaffan
2. The best indication of future U.K. policy is its track record to date. Over 3 years it has failed despite repeated requests to put credible plans on the table for Border in Ireland. It has not faced up to its incompatible preferences. @BrigidLaffan
3. There is no certainty that an Irish compromise would alter the outcome in London. There is no Brexit clean enough for the ultras other than rupture. @BrigidLaffan
4. Ireland would be submitting itself to a high degree of uncertainty on the future-there is no future FTA that deals with the border given U.K. redlines & HMG itself acknowledges AA will not be ready in any event. @BrigidLaffan
5. This is not about red faces, emotional difficulty or green jerseys. It is about core state interests & peace on island. No Irish Government should relinquish this to a populist London Gov that does not care about Ireland.@BrigidLaffan
6. The excellent article in yesterday’s Irish Times outlining Irish diplomats experience in dealing with successive U.K. Govs, confirms for me at least the extraordinary risk Ireland would take. @BrigidLaffan
7. Relying on a veto in 2,3,4,5 years is a risky business of Ireland’s negotiating credibility was undermined. There are no risk free options but this piece sees them as issues of face. No they are issues of core state interest.
