After another tragic decade of gun violence in America, the Supreme Court will consider its first major challenge to gun safety laws since 2010.

My colleagues & I filed a brief detailing how special interests have all but rigged the case.

After putting Kavanaugh on the Court to “break the tie,” the @NRA, @FedSoc & other partisan dark money groups are confident that the Court’s Republican-appointed majority will rule in their favor.
@NRA @FedSoc Meanwhile, Americans are being murdered every day with firearms in classrooms or movie theaters or churches or city streets.
@NRA @FedSoc No number of lives lost will ever sway the gun lobby and their judicial enablers.

If left up to them, this grim routine will continue in perpetuity.

The response to our brief from Republicans and the partisan donor interests driving the Court’s polarization shows exactly why it’s time to speak out. They want us to shut up about their capture of the Court; we will not.

It projects on the brief changing the Court’s number, something neither the brief nor any author of it has proposed.
It matches the talking points from far-right "news" outlets almost exactly, likely signaling coordination.

@exxonmobil @USChamber @ShopFloorNAM Fear of liability seems to be the only thing that gets corporate attention (an imperfect proxy for morals but better than nothing), and even then they litigate, lie and pack courts.

Tuesday, the judge drafted a memo requesting that the First Amendment be reconsidered carefully. He addressed the infamous New York Times v. Sullivan, a case ruling that made it virtually impossible for the press to be sued by public figures for libel and biased “fake news.”
Thomas wrote that he thought previous Supreme Court rulings on the First Amendment became about politics… and wrongly so.

“We should not continue to reflexively apply this policy-driven approach to the Constitution,” he said.

Gun violence has become routine in America. We have lost too many of our classmates, friends, family members, and children to this epidemic. As a nation, we are weary — but the courage of the students, faculty, and parents at Stoneman Douglas is creating new energy in this fight.
Now is the time for Congress to follow their lead. Let’s acknowledge the epidemic of gun violence -- and the corrupting influence of the gun lobby in Washington. Let’s bust the false choice that you can either support the Second Amendment or support reasonable gun safety laws.
Let’s work now to ban weapons of war whose primary purpose is to kill the largest number of human beings in the shortest amount of time possible. Let’s get this done and keep our schools safe.
