How are Kashmiris coping under lockdown? We discuss LIVE now on @AJEnglish and YouTube.
Millions in Indian-administered Kashmir are living under curfew after the government revoked the state’s semi-autonomy. Thousands of troops were sent to the Muslim-majority region, while telephone lines and internet connections are blocked.
Today we speak to @UniWestminster associate professor of politics and international relations @NitashaKaul, @trtworld journalist @Babaumarr, and Jindal School of International Affairs professor and dean @sreeramchaulia.
We’ll look at what lies in store for the people of Kashmir amid the ongoing lockdown. Join the conversation.
"I think this anger is building and its kind of a wall that's waiting to burst," says @Babaumarr on the feelings of Kashmiris during this time.
@NitashaKaul: "Its unjustifiable by any standards to take a whole population and put them under siege while at the same time claiming to be 'developing' them ... This is a whole population that's literally being put into a cage and isolated."
"This is completely unprecedented and it’s not only about disenfranchising people of their status but it’s also about denying them basic dignity and human rights," said Farah Bashir via video comment.
"These restrictions are temporary. These restrictions are not meant to be forever ... Gradually, the restrictions are being lifted from sector to sector," says @sreeramchaulia.
"Why should we trust the government?" @Babaumarr asks.
@NitashaKaul: "This is a well-choreographed move that is meant to push Kashmiris against a wall and to try and incite them about their helplessness and incite them to greater violence."
@sreeramchaulia: "I think that a lot of fake news has been circulating, especially with international media, which have their own ideological biases here."
@sreeramchaulia @NitashaKaul replied: "Respond substantially to what I said. Don't just say 'fake news.'"
"This is basically the final blow to Kashmiris in that longer process. And we of course, we oppose it, and Kashmiris will oppose it. They are not going to sit quiet because for them it’s an existential question," said @mjunaidr via video comment.
@Babaumarr: "All the fear is that Kashmiris will become minorities in their own state."
@BabaUmarr "The Kashmiris are the people ... who are being suffocated on every side," says @NitashaKaul.
