While I have deep respect for India and its important relationship with the US, I condemn the revocation of #Article370 & #Article35A, the imposed comms blockade, suppression of life-saving medical care, and reports of widespread human rights violations in #Jammu and #Kashmir.
The communication blockade doesn’t just mean people cannot get in touch with their families, it also means shortages of medicine and an inability to receive medical care.…
And multiple reports indicate that over 3,000 people have been indefinitely detained without charges by the Indian government under the Public Safety Act, including children, lawyers, doctors, religious leaders, and opposition political leaders.…

In more than 50 interviews, residents in a dozen villages in #Kashmir told The Associated Press @AP that the military had raided their homes since India’s government imposed a security crackdown in the region Aug. 5.

This we, in Kerala saw in run to last parliament elections. His book, 'Why I am a Hindu' and the @INCIndia projecting @RahulGandhi as Janeu-Dhari Hindu were not coincidental (3/n)
We have seen his flip-flops before. A good example was #Sabarimala Women Entry Issue. Note, what he said in 2010:…

He then said that "there is nothing sacrosanct about social practices...

There is a saying in Bengali which means the house owner starts taking precautions once the robbery is over. For last three weeks @RahulGandhi became a poster boy of #Pakistan by his immature acts on #Kashmir issue. The realization now dawns that he must change track. 1/n
It is not known what prompted #RahulGandhi 2 try visiting #Kashmir last week, knowing fully well that the #Modi government got moral/legal sanction from the Supreme Court 2 take all preventive measures 2 stop blood spill and, that Gandhi would be returned like other leaders. 2/n
One may see the shadow of #Wayanad in #RahulGandhi's desperation but, to me his acts only helped the politically irrelevant #Left to stay in news. Left has a history of opposing Congress in States while joining hands hands in d Centre. #Congress's gains were short term. 3/n

#Kashmir thread: It’s been 20 days since India unilaterally revoked #Article370, flew in thousands of troops, imposed an unprecedented communications blackout & curfew-like conditions. Starting a thread on all of the @washingtonpost coverage of the issue here -
On Aug 5, India revokes special status of Kashmir. The decision and its stealthy implementation are likely to further damage New Delhi’s relationship with its most restive state and ignite unrest there.…
While the news made headlines globally, a day later, there had been almost no word from inside Kashmir, a situation many described as a “siege.”…

Something MASSIVELY odd at the SC registry:

In April, I filed a PIL in the SC seeking a probe into Modi's undeclared assets.

SC registry gave me a list of "defects" on 16 Apr that needed to be cured to list my PIL.

These were simple clerical defects (screenshots). (1/13)
I cleared the defects & re-submitted the petition on 26th April. I'd cleared all defects that were informed to me as well as listed on the SC website for my PIL.

I'd requested an urgent hearing in the case and requested the registry to list the matter as soon as possible (2/13)
I kept checking the SC website after that for 10 days to see if defects been cleared (which usually takes 2 days max).

I called up the SC registry & was told "there are more defects. Pls come here & we'll tell u".

Funnily, nothing was yet updated on the website. (3/13)

Why exactly BJP IT cell hates @Shehla_Rashid and trending #arrestShehlaRashid

1. She was the first #Kashmiri girl to win #JNUSU elections with maximum votes in that year.
2. Shehla-Kanhaiya duo lead #OccupyUGCMovement against scraping of UGC fellowship leading to transfer of the then MHRD minister @smritiirani to Textile.
3. When @kanhaiyakumar dubiously got arrested, she successfully lead the movement for the release of all JNU students.

#Article370: CJI Ranjan Gogoi berating ML Sharma for the poor drafting of petition.

What kind of petition is this? What are your pleadings, prayer. We don't want to dismiss it because it might affect other petitions

In a matter of this nature, how can you file such a petition?
#Article370: I tried to read your petition for half an hour but could not understand it, CJI Ranjan Gogoi to ML Sharma

ML Sharma seeking permission to amend petition.
#Article370: Four other petitions on Jammu & Kashmir also have defects which are yet to be cured, says CJI

"We accommodate you in between Ayodhya hearing and this is what we get in return", CJI Gogoi.

@hasanminhaj It is very sad to see some one talk about #Article370 and Kashmir as if that is the only story. Article 370 was applicable on the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) where Kashmir having slightly more than 50% population of the whole state, was one out of three provinces, 1/8
@hasanminhaj others being Jammu and Ladakh. In the name of Independence, Some Kashmiris under influence of Pakistani expansionists and religious fundamentalists with financial, religious and tactical support from pakistan had adopted means of armed terrorism 2/8
@hasanminhaj to achieve the ulterior objective of merging J&K with pakistan. Since India has always rejected two nation theory based on religion, it has all the right to defend its territory and people from the mischievous objectives of pakistan. 3/8

Regardless of the veracity of the terror threat in #Kashmir, that the government used it as subterfuge to prepare the ground for its dramatic steps is now beyond question.
Yet, among all the din of jubilation and paeans to the ‘making of history’, the fact that the government most probably misled the people over the nature of a terrorist threat is now almost an irrelevant aside. #Article370 #Article35A
As the ruling party rightly anticipated, people don’t seem to mind being deceived. This acceptance to lying with a “mixture of gullibility & cynicism” is reminiscent of d totalitarian societies Hannah Arendt described in her book The Origins of Totalitarianism. How #Fascism work

Did Patel, Ambedkar really oppose Article 370?First of all, very idea that a few members of previous Cabinet can be singled out by later-day historians/politicians to prove a point is flawed, as a Cabinet is supposed to function on the principle of collective responsibility.>>
Alleged opposition of Ambedkar & Patel to Article 370 is unsustainable defence for any step taken by today’s Cabinet, simply on this ground.
2nd, document & evidence show that the then Cabinet led by former PM Nehru worked on mutual consultations on the Kashmir issue.#Kashmir >
Besides, in Nehru’s day, all powers were not centralised /concentrated in PM’s Office, as has become norm today. Patel’s biographer Rajmohan Gandhi points out: ‘Gandhi, Nehru & Patel formed a crucial triumvirate that agreed that independent India would not be a Hindu Rashtra >>

Thread on #Kashmir .. I’ll be using this as a news aggregator & comments thread. If some mistakes are made will acknowledge but won’t delete.
1n. Earlier @NicolaCareem tweeted a video, suggesting that the protestors were peaceful & that violence was one sided from the police
2n nothing can be further from the truth. Thanks to some great analysis by @detresfa_ , @Natsecjeff & @KashmirSource (the same 2 guys some of you idiots want banned) we can see:
a) heavy stone pelting
b) protestors carrying sticks
This means the protests were NOT peaceful
3n this same video at the end shows a genuinely peaceful protest being allowed to pass off with full police protection. Note police are not intervening, even though these protestors earlier were walking down a street & could have been intercepted

@RajivMessage has written some extraordinary long form articles a long time ago which hold true even today. Here's one of them revisited via a thread of extracts. The link is in the last tweet of the thread. #Article370 #KashmirHamaraHai
It is commonly accepted as an article of faith that Kashmir is the root cause of all problems between India and Pakistan. I disagree with this premise, and wish to demonstrate that the ‘Kashmir issue’ is the clash of two worldviews: pluralism vs exclusivisim.
Most people fail to recognize that this clash between pluralism and exclusivism does indeed exist. This exposes an intellectual failing and lack of preparation in getting to the root cause of the India-Pakistan conflict.

Which Indian journalists, academics, intellectuals were the beneficiaries of Fai's ISI-funded largesse? Who were the regular guests of the 2 Families and feasted on wazwan paid for with money stolen from people? Check their names. Now check who are crying hoarse over #Article370.
Who are the intel officers, including certain top guns, now retired, who had access to limitless GoI funds for their 'work' in #JammuAndKashmir ? Was an ex-RAW person helping ABV (and later MMS) on #Kashmir or running a transfer-posting-promotion racket?
Who received 'loans' from J&K Bank? What are the bank's NPA details? Who fronted for beneficiaries? To cleanse Kashmir of malcontent, make details public. Also publish list of journalists who are regular visitors to Pakistan High Commission and residences of Pakistani diplomats.

With #Article370 being abolished, a quick thread on the man who started it all - Syama Prasad Mukherjee - and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's dubious involvement in his "death".
Syama Prasad Mukherjee (stylized Mookerjee in many places) was one of the first leaders of the precursors to the RSS and BJP — Hindu Mahasabha and Jan Sangh. Although he was part of the first Nehru cabinet , the two did not really see eye-to-eye on many matters.
Foremost of them being the application of Section 370 on Kashmir. In the initial years of Independence, Kashmir, apart from having their own separate flag and constitution, also had a separate Prime Minister, the “Sadr-e-riyasat”.

[THREAD] The early history of Islam in #Kashmir
Given the current situation in Kashmir, a lot of commentary has been thrown around. I've seen many comments that are celebrating the full-blown occupation of India's only Muslim-majority as some kind of a correction of history, as a way to justify what is happening.
As reported in @nytimes, for example, Ramesh Shinde of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (a Hindu nationalist group) said that the revoking of #Article370 was “a historic step toward establishing the Hindu Rashtra”, the Hindu nation.

Tweet thread on #Kashmir #Article370 #Constitutional changes.
I fear the travails and tribulations of the people of #JammuAndKashmir will continue for a very long time before they get better. The changes wrought on 5 August 2019 by #ModiSarkar2 are driven by ideology and politics
They are not driven by pragmatic considerations of what is good for the people of that troubled region of India. #ModiSarkar2 argues that with the special status gone development beckons and a new dawn starts. What they don't explain is what about the previous regime prevented it
Much will depend on how the changes are implemented but the very manner in which they were pushed through Parliament, the various sleights of hand and specious legal tricks, and the deployment of troops to #lockdown Kashmir - all these bode ill for the future

A few years ago, a friend who works with an NGO had organized a trip of Kashmiri school children to Mumbai. On the last day of the trip, the kids were being shown around different places in Mumbai for sightseeing. They were all between ages of 8-14. (1/13)
I went along to help her out. After an evening of sightseeing, we took the kids out for dinner followed by ice-cream. All of a sudden, a little 8-year-old girl from the group asked me the time. (2/13)
I said it was 8:30pm. Immediately a few of the kids broke out into a huddle & started whispering. Some of them put away their ice-cream & said “ok we’re ready. Let’s leave”. (3/13)

As per chatter in high-level bureaucratic circles GoI is in talks with foreign multinational corporations for development of Srinagar-Jammu Industrial Corridor, including Chinese ones. A major Kashmir Development Summit slated to be organised soon with global investors lined-up.
Meanwhile discussions are also underway for a possible deployment of American missiles in Kashmir - possibly Ladakh. The move already rejected by Australians.

Washington withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces INF Treaty, the sametime military was deployed in Kashmir
Both Australia and South Korea have categorically rejected US demand for the deployment of American ground-based missiles on their soil.

Hence, India is on the cards now.
