How do you deal with the ups and downs of founder life?
There are a *lot* more founders out there today compare to when I got out of college 16 years ago and started my first online business.

Back then, the discussions were oriented around how to start and grow a business.

Tactical nitty gritty details that weren’t freely available.
Most of my conversations with founders today are oriented around dealing with the ups and downs of founder life while managing emotions along the way.

The shift has happened from deeply tactical discussions to deeply personal ones.

Managing ourselves is the theme right now.
It’s no wonder that some of the most popular content on startup twitter is related to mental health.

As a founder your mental health impacts everyone around you including family.

Managing yourself doesn’t get easier as your company grows. It gets more challenging and nuanced.
The knowledge to start and grow a business is freely available.

Early stage capital is increasingly more and more accessible whether your goal is to build a 🦄 or not.

Now we’ve realized that we are in our own way as founders and we are seeking solutions to manage ourselves.
Founders are looking for help to learn how to manage themselves.

They are asking for it directly.

They are discussing their personal problems with each other.

They now know that the problems in their organizations are a reflection of themselves. Not anyone else.
First-time founders don’t know about the personal emotional investment they’ll have to make in order to make their businesses work.

It isn’t just about working hard, or putting in the hours.

It’s about your own emotions, feelings and the people you have to manage day-to-day.
It doesn’t matter what job you had or if you just got out of school before you start a business.

If it’s your first-time as a founder, your pace of learning and growth will outpace anything else you did in the past.

This pace will change you.
At the heart (pun intended) of the founder mental health movement is one word:

Stress.

We don’t have stressful jobs in the same sense as if it’s life or death.

But it can sure feel like that.

This takes us away from our mental equilibrium.

Causing a unique type of stress.
