The rats in both the central and regional leadership of the BJP, who were gung-ho about the #NRC even during the general election hoping to drive a schism between Hindus and Muslims and cause riots, are now abandoning ship faster than you can say "NRC".
And that is because one of the worst affected communities in Assam, due to the NRC, has been the Bengali Hindu people. Parts of that community gained support of the BJP due to their Citizenship Bill, hoping their religious beliefs will stop Indian citizenship questions.
But from the very beginning, starting with the violence in Assam in the 1980s, the agitation was aimed at the Bengali-speaking community, regardless of religion. During the many "massacres", Hindus were killed and maimed almost at the same rate as Muslims.
Only because they spoke Bengali. Even during the recent election campaign, the turncoat BJP stalwart in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said that they "don't need the "votes of the lungi and dhoti", implying Bengali Muslims and Bengali Hindus.
The NRC has been so traumatic for people, that a few committed suicide over anxiety regarding citizenship status. Many now have mental health conditions, over deportation fears. And by many, I mean 9 out of 10 people.
