Indians across faiths follow syncretic traditions. Recently, Tryambakeshwar, a jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva near #Nashik in #Maharashtra, hit the headlines after it was alleged that some Muslims tried to forcibly enter the shrine
Later, it was clarified that the men were following a decades-old tradition, where the devotees of the Sufi saint Hazrat Syed Ghulab Shahavali Baba stand outside the temple and blow the smoke from the loban (frankincense) into it as a mark of respect

Manwath is a taluka in #Maharashtra's #Parbhani district. It is located around 500-km from #Mumbai. This obscure place was rocked by a series of 10 gruesome ritualistic murders in the 1970s. These killings were the result of #superstition.
#thread #truecrime #police #history ImageImageImage
Five girls who were about ten years old, an year-old child and four women in their mid-thirties were murdered between 14 November 1972 and 4 January, 1974. These murders had a similar modus operandi and pattern. They were committed at night. These incidents shocked #Maharashtra
The time and location of the crime, use of women as victims, nature of injuries caused to them, pvt parts of some of the victims being cut to extract blood, the absence of motive for the killings, the attempt to dodge the police and the extreme brutality made the case macabre

The #food scene in #Mumbai is actually very boring. #Pune is very vibrant in comparison with several choices on offer. One is actually spoilt for choice…
when it comes to #Marathi food l, there is Surves Pure non-veg at F C road, the various restaurants like Nagpur hotel and Shambhavi in Sadashiv Peth, mutton bhakri joints at Khed Shivapur, Milan and Aware Khanaval at Kumthekar Road,
Kothrud and Paud road have restaurants serving niche cuisine from parts of #Maharashtra like North Maharashtra. I could go on and on… perhaps because of high real estate prices and rentals, #Mumbai does not see too many of these budget, affordable places.

It has been my peeve that much of #Maharashtrian cuisine is not found in #Mumbai’s restaurants. Most #Marathi places offer #Goan or #Malvani #food. Perhaps because many Marathis here hail from these coastal regions. I found Martand at Lalbag which serves Ghati food #FoodTwitter ImageImageImage
We decided to begin with Javla papad which serves small, dry prawns with masala papad. 4.5/5 ImageImage
Then, we ordered Martand Special Mutton Thali. It comes with Malvani rassa, kala rassa, Alani rassa, kharida mutton, mutton in black gravy, egg masala in black gravy, solkadi, one jowar bhakri and Indrayani rice

Just watched the #CNNTownhall with 2024 Presidential candidate and former President @realDonaldTrump , as well as the post-townhall panel discussion.

One thing is clear: #America is a broken country. It's split right down the middle.

Racial divisions and #massshootings are peaking, the economy is cratering, #poverty and #homelessness are rising.

And meanwhile, the US government is involved in, or threatening to get involved in, wars from #Ukraine to #Taiwan to #Syria to #Iran to #NorthKorea.

When they should be working on healing the divisions in their own nation. White vs non-White, Rural vs Urban, Rich vs Poor, drug addiction, broken homes - all these are tearing America apart.

There was a hierarchy to how the scamsters operated. Some of them called up citizens, posing as policemen and flashing fake ID cards, over WhatsApp and Skype. Women were targetted the most. In Delhi, one of the scamsters made a video call to a woman, dressed in a khaki uniform.
The victims were told that a parcel he/she had sent by courier was found containing drugs. The terrified victims were deceived into downloading apps, such as Anydesk, that provided the scamster with remote access to his phone screen.

Mumbai: the city of dreams, Local trains and now Metro, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar!

Must be a mammoth task to govern it and I was fortunate to get a first hand view of the flagship of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation today, thanks to @Khaki_Tours!

#Mumbai #BMC
Most people will@say Mumbai was formed by the amalgamation of 7 islands, but in reality there were 23 of them.

A large part of the city is reclaimed land and 2/3 feet under sea level, which often causes flooding during monsoon, often unfairly blamed totally on the BMC.
The BMC as we know it extended upto Mahim and Sion till 1950, when it was extended upto Jogeshwari and Mankurd/Bhandup.

Later it was extended upto Borivali/Dahisar and Mulund a few years later.

But first we must go a few centuries back to understand the history!

This century old portrait is from the library of my Grant Medical College in Mumbai!
Who is he? How is he related to the famous Gray's Anatomy? How did he end up here?
A fascinating story from the archives of medicine! Image
The gentleman in this fine portrait is Henry Vandyke Carter. If you have ever seen earlier editions of Gray's anatomy, you will have noticed the gorgeous illustrations in them. Arguably, these illustrations made Gray's Anatomy a superlative text Image
The artist to those illustrations is Van Dyke Carter!
Instead of following convention of labelling structures outside the diagram, see how he labels them on the diagram itself, making out so easy to understand! Image

Much of the writings about #VDSavarkar paint him in black-&-white, when the truth lies in shades of grey. Brushing inconvenient facts under the carpet, does not do justice to #Savarkar's complex personality. This is a thread about Savarkar from a historic perspective #history Image
On 9 June 1906, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a 23-year-old from Nashik, bid adieu to wife Yamuna and their toddler son Prabhakar, and boarded the SS Persia in Bombay to sail for England to study law. However, even as he was in the high seas,
Stanley Egerley from the Bombay government’s special department sent a confidential letter (14 June) to R. Ritchie in the India Office, London, about Savarkar. Egerley said Savarkar held “…somewhat the same opinions” as the revolutionary Damodar Hari Chaphekar, who assassinated

Till date, I have been unable to understand the adulatory reports about flats & penthouses in #Mumbai being sold for astronomical sums. How many people as a % of population can afford to buy them? The vast majority of people stay in far-flung areas like Vashind, Karjat etc &
spend half their lives commuting in local trains. Their ambitions & lives remain unconsummated thanks to this soul & body sucking commute. Their mental health too goes for a toss. Observe how people are willing to jump at each other in trains for the most trivial reason.
After all, what can you expect when people travel for long hours in crowded trains in the sweltering heat? These extended suburbs are almost like the ghettos of yore in apartheid era South Africa, providing labour to #Mumbai.
