A thing I like to do and would like to do more of is reflect on my purchases over the years. Every purchase is part of a bigger story that you can explore to learn more about yourself, and more about “the world”, even
Wife and I recently bought a Nespresso coffee machine. We used to just buy coffee from the kopitiam downstairs, because it’s relatively cheap and easy to get. But I did have to go downstairs to buy it every time. while it scratched the caffeine itch, it was inconsistent quality
So what started happening was, every so often, my wife would start buying coffee from McCafe, which is 2x the price, and also ~3x further away. She’d often buy it otw home at night and stick it in the fridge. Typically, if she was buying coffee, I’d ask her to get me one too
While we were ok with spending $3 for 2 meh coffees a day, frequently spending $7-8 started seeming a little excessive. Also, I remembered that I had a Nespresso machine in my office back in the day and used it regularly. Reliable and consistent and decent enough
For the coffee nerds and snobs, we are not under any pretense that Nespresso machines make great coffee. The goal isn’t great coffee - the goal is an optimal configuration for us at the time, based on our needs, constraints, behaviour patterns
I try to apply this thinking to everything in my life. The point is to be in tune, to be in harmony with the world around you.

I used to have a big guitar amp, but it turns out that a small, portable one sparks more joy bc I can carry it around easily
I think a common point of confusion that trips people up (including my past self, a lot) is that they tend to take some variable and assume that it must be the most important. "The most important thing about a guitar amp is great sound quality" – not necessarily
I used to work with a lot of freelance writers for work. A freelance writer doesn't actually need to be an amazing writer. They need to be *good enough*, and then the most important thing is that they're consistent, reliable, communicate early, good at taking feedback
Here are two power banks. The one on the left is an Anker. It's a big, heavy motherfucker stores a ridiculous amount of charge, and I bought it at the recommendation of tech nerds. The one on the right is an iWalk, and I bought it after borrowing one from my brother-in-law
you already know what I'm going to say. The iWalk, while it stores less charge fits nicely in my pocket together with my phone, is light to carry around, and is, for me, the superior product. Importantly, it also doesn't need an extra cable. I have saved friends with this
I liked it so much and found it so easy and intuitive to use that I bought a second one. One is charging one of my playstation controllers *while* it's being charged. I hardly ever use the Anker anymore (though it is still pretty nice to have in a pinch)
