1. Confusing what's teed up for Wednesday in Parliament. Appears the Fixed Term Parliaments Act needs a 2/3 majority to set nationwide election likely on Oct 15. Also appears they can do a straight majority simple vote to put on a national election, likely on the same date.
2. Labour leader @jeremycorbyn is first seeking a vote on a bill to stop any no-deal Brexit going forward. Tory commentators say that will kill Brexit. Tories say it will give EU control over Brexit. Don't these folks know that Brexit was a Kremlin op? I think it may be time
3. for Tories just like Trump to go back to Russia. Somehow you had to know that like in the US the people who have been waiving the flag and claiming ultra-patriotism would all turn out to be pro-Kremlin quislings.

Broadly speaking the parties have the following approaches to a General Election

CONSERVATIVES
Want it as soon as possible, and ideally 15 Oct

OPPOSITION PARTIES
Want it after 31 October
The problem for the opposition parties is if the election is called Monday 9 Sept, a 15 Oct General Election is what you get

Delay calling a General Election until after prorogation has ended on 14 Oct means opposition parties are branded cowards, chickens etc. until then

Johnson cannot call an election, only Parliament can

Please remember this - it is not his ultimatum to give
There is no real point Johnson threatening parliament with [x] when [x] is a thing over which parliament has control and not Johnson
There can be a general election in three situations

- two votes of no confidence under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act

- a 2/3 majority under same Act (as in 2017)

- Parliament pass primary legislation to hold election "notwithstanding" the FTPA

All outside Johnson's control

Second, for an election to happen under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act, 2/3 of MPs will have to vote to trigger it

You do not want No Deal Brexit happening mid-campaign, so one of two things has to happen:
- election either 17 or 24 Oct
- request an Article 50 Extension from EU

There is a growing misunderstanding afoot. The PM can’t just call an election any more. Not Boris, nor any other. That hasn’t been possible since the passage of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act (2011). Now if they want one, two thirds of all MPs have to agree first. (1)
That’s 434 of them. If 217 MPs object, no general election, and this Parliament limps on until June 9, 2022. Boris could indeed table a dissolution vote under the Act if he fears legislation that blocks No Deal is about to be passed, and insist the people should decide that. (2)
But under any calculation, he needs a lot of Labour votes - and therefore Jeremy Corbyn’s support - to succeed. Would Corbyn really fancy his chances against Boris, who will paint it as Leave v Remain again, with Labour’s Brexit policy such a confused mess? (3)
