I was born poor & grew up working class.

But while we're talking about structural inequality & inequity, may I please use this moment to acknowledge that black and Latinx women face even steeper barriers and challenges at every imaginable level of our society and economy?
Black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes.

The fact that we're the only country in the developed world not to provide universal healthcare is a reason.

So is systemic bias.

Black women are paid less, 61 cents for every dollar a white male is paid, no matter what their education achievement, whether the job is low- or high-paying, where they live or what their age is.

We have a literal show-your-papers bill here in Texas, SB4, a shameful history of segregation, and Latinx women are still subjected to discrimination no matter what their level of excellence or achievement.

Why is my Democratic opponent spreading lies and attacking me? 1/
In a mass email yesterday, my opponent made a clumsy attempt at painting me as some kind of plutocratic corporate lawyer, by stating “she has spent her career as in-house corporate counsel for HCA, the largest for-profit hospital monopoly in the world.” 2/
A quick LinkedIn search is all you have to do to see that I am a Division Controller - a financial position ensuring accuracy in financial reporting - essentially, my job is ensuring transparency and accountability. I am not "in-house counsel". But even if I was, so what? 3/

I'm a healthcare advocate, lawyer, accountant and working mom. I upturned my entire life to run for Congress.

I'm running because it's time for honest, decent working Texans like us to end the status quo and to take our country back from the extremist minority. 1/
I grew up very poor. I was born in South Oak Cliff, and moved to Ovilla when I was 11. My mom was a school teacher. My dad owned a pawn shop. 2/
I took care of my mom for the last for the last 15 years of her life as she struggled with a chronic disease. And I'm taking care of my dad now. 3/

I grew firmly at the bottom of the Middle Class. Sometimes we had pancakes for dinner because that's all we could afford. My parents managed to scrape by each month, but there wasn't much left over.

They sure as hell couldn't afford to send me to college.

I wasn't an athlete, so nobody was lining up to give me an all expense paid ride to play ball for some great school.

I wasn't a terrible student, but I my grades weren't good enough that anybody was interested in giving me a grant or scholarship either.

After high school, I worked two jobs and managed a couple years at the local junior college. I think I managed one semester full time, but mostly it was a class here and there as I could afford.

Elizabeth Warren is simply killing it in “the ideas primary.” This one idea alone would positively benefit almost 75 million people directly, and provide a huge boost to the economy in general.
The cost is about the same as the Republican’s billionaire tax cut, but instead of giving away most of the benefits to already rich people, Warren’s plan benefits poor and middle-income people. What a concept, eh?
For most of my adult life Dems were afraid to propose economically progressive policies because of what Republicans would say about them, ever fearful of losing the white moderate vote. I'm no political strategist (just a political historian), but I'd say those days are gone.

People who grew up working class have more stories than a canned line like, "My mom scrubbed toilets."

I'll tell ya what it's like actually going up poor in America.

First, you're ashamed to have friends come over to your house.

Shame is a theme of growing up poor...
We never travelled more than an hour from our house, because even if we could afford vacations (we couldn't), there was a good chance the car would break down on the road.

YEARS after having a car, as an adult I still had had flashbackers wondering, "Will my car start?"
Not knowing if your car will start is a feeling everyone who grew up poor in flyover area (no public transportation) knows well.

There's a sound a car makes when you pop the key in and move the ignition, and your car doesn't start.

A lot of this is received authenticity politics, combined with a hazy understanding of class dimensions when we're young.

In my case, I thought we were working class because we had working-class neighbors and my parents didn't have the house or fancy degrees my classmates did.
I didn't realize at the time that we were solidly middle class, but because I went to a (public) magnet school my classmates had mostly upper-middle-class parents... and the *upper* class went to tony private schools.
But I always thought my parents--my dad in particular--grew up working class, since he made such a big deal about growing up on the South Side of Chicago.

But he was middle class, too. Not only did all of his siblings have some college, his dad did, too.

In the 1930s, no less.

On the issue of ignorance and feelings in an age of opinion: I grew up working class. Surrounding me were men and women who, though not formally educated, placed huge value on the acquisition of knowledge as a mark of self-respect. Our local library flourished. /1
I can see one such man in my mind's eye now. A pub quiz champion. A self-taught expert on Mahler. A drinker who could recite every line of Shakespeare.. What marked these people wasn't snobbery, but the idea that to be in ignorance was, while not wrong, worth correcting. /2
To know something was liberation - a growth of self that gave a life dignity. One of the worst insults on those streets was to be an 'ignoramus' - someone who gloried in their own lack of knowledge. This wasn't a slight on those who *couldn't* know, but those who chose not to. /3
