From where I sit, it looks like monoprice.com has gone completely off the air. Wha happent?
It’s weird. Monoprice.com won’t come up on my phone or my computer. Everything else works, even monopricesupport.kayako.com
Their website has always worked, and I order from them quite a bit. I just received a shipment that is short 2 items, and they go off the air. They must be doing this to avoid sending me those $2 audio cords, right?

When a complex system breaks, it never goes back to its original state. Never. Yes, it seeks out some state of equilibrium, some stable state, but it moves forward from its broken state, so it could be something completely different from what it was originally. 1
When complex systems break, they become far less manageable than they were when they were stable. Because everything is connected to everything, everything is pushed towards instability. 2
IE: airplanes with 2 engines are regarded as safer than those with just 1. But pilots have a saying, “All the second engine does is fly you to the scene of the crash.” The point is that an airplane stable with 2 engines is unstable with only 1, and therefore much harder to fly. 3

Well, all of the above. Mostly, design is widely considered to be a lightweight, visual, post-facto treatment of complex engineering products. That’s kinda all wrong and backwards. 1
It wouldn’t be an unreasonable argument to say that complex systems cannot be designed, and software is always a complex system. 2
But of course, complex systems are designed all of the time. The main problem is that the design given to them is simple, because everyone struggles with the complexity. 3

I mean things like the incredibly strong influence of already existing code over writing new code. 1
@nclinton People don’t discuss how every single line of code is built on top of millions of other lines of code that they didn’t write & don’t have control over. Prolly didn’t buy (or select) it, either. That pre-existing code has more power over what you write than what you write does. 2
@nclinton An important aspect of technical grounding is an understanding and appreciation of how much code fails, how many products fail, how much money is wasted. 3

O.k., this is happening ... now. I'm going to explain what's actually going on when data is encrypted, hopefully without mystifying, oh and some of the weird and inconsistent stuff cryptographers come up with.

O.k. so symmetric encryption - that's what we most commonly use when we want to encrypt gobs of data, large and small. Your browser sends and receives your data with symmetric encryption. If your files or disk are encrypted ... that's symmetric encryption.
iMessage, Signal, WhatsApp - they all use symmetric encryption to actually encrypt your messages. So at it's most basic, when you think of encryption as take chunks of data and "scrambling" them so that nobody who doesn't have a key can understand them, that's this.
