What David Brooks gets COMPLETELY wrong is that these fanatics and killers aren't "coddled." They're afloat in abusive, fragile, fictional toxic masculinity and when they don't measure up they snap. He's trying too hard to tie the current crisis to progress and not regression.
These killings, these attacks, these abuses are actions by men who are trying to display how tough and strong they are despite having failed to live up to fictional expectations. Brooks gets this absolutely, a thousand percent wrong because he can't see past his own ideology.
Mass shootings aren't because of moral relativism. They're because of dogma. Outdated, poisonous dogma that twists its followers until they break. He should be ashamed for diving into important discourse without being at all informed.
