Just because I am talking about the woman who once was one of my closest friends, a young Black woman I met through work, but with whom I became good friends, spending Thanksgiving with her family, taking her kids to the doctor, and generally having a lot of fun.
We are still in touch, though she's moved to Texas so it's by phone. I see her sister sometimes to catch up, and we call each other too seldom. And I feel like it's all my fault she moved away. This is sort of a funny story
We went to Take Back America (not for work) and participated in a protest of Dick Cheney and so on. It was her first time out of Portland but our hotel was near Dupont Circle and I thought it would be a disgrace to be in DC and not have her experience the Blackness of DC
So we caught a cab and I asked the driver to recommend someplace we could go where it was mostly Black people. So he took us to some cafe/bar with a club next door and I was a fish out of water, but my friend who in Portland never gets to be the majority except at church was so
energized and excited by she decided to move to DC, Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, or any other place where she could be in the majority and when she got the chance, she did. Moved and is so happy with her choice.
p.s. I know that take me where the Black people are sounds so terribly awful. It did at the time, but I really did want her to experience being the majority even though that meant feeling my own discomfort at being a white singleton. It felt like I was wearing a neon sign
I still miss her, though.
