Once upon a time we had elevated levels of revolutionary consciousness in this country, but because we did not act to realize its material potential it fizzled out to be replaced by a false national chauvinism that will soon disintegrate into narrow tribalism.

Why do we have a drug problem in South Africa? We have a drug problem because we have massive unemployment and people are seeking escape in either fringe religions or drugs.

Why do we have unemployment? We have unemployment because we have a massively concentrated monopolized economy which has no room for new entrants and cannot create new jobs. Why can the monopolistic economy not create jobs? Because it is based on mining and agribusiness.
Minerals are rapidly depleting. Mining and agribusiness are both shedding jobs. Mine and farm workers lack skills. We are educating people with advanced skills for an economy that has no use for these skills as we are still trapped in a low wage, low skill extractive economy.
Why can we not shift the economy? Because we do not own the economy, it is owned by multinational corporations listed in Britain, Europe, North America, China and Japan. Why don't we add value to our minerals and engage in manufacturing?
Because we do not own our minerals, the mining corporations that own our minerals do not even have to have export permits to ship the minerals off. We do not even have restrictions on strategic minerals essential for our economic development.
Instead of engaging on these strategic issues we are rampaging through the streets attacking other Africans. Sometimes I give up and pull the hair from my head.
