THREAD: The Health in Justice Action Lab has been studying the impact of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs. See our latest report on the "Promises and Perils of PDMPs" here: docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/1367d9_215…
@LeoBeletsky and many collaborators found 4 key themes that warrant investigation. 1st: Metrics of "success" have not been adequately defined. Despite rapid implementation, evidence on whether PDMPs reduce overdose deaths and prevent Rx misuse are mixed. annals.org/aim/article-ab…
Aside from lack of "success" metrics, The 2nd theme concerns who has access to PDMPs and for what purpose? Police are able to run searches to find "doctor shoppers" and rogue prescribers. What does that mean for patient privacy? see: @NateWessler aclu.org/blog/privacy-t…
On privacy and law enforcement, work by @jenndoliva has on the DEA and the 4th Amendment has been critical: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
For more on law enforcement behavior and access re: PDMPs, work by @AnnieBoustead for @OSFramework is a great resource: osf.io/ha6wv/
The 3rd major theme: PDMP access can impact several vulnerable populations, including pain patients, LGBTQ, people with SUD, and folks who are on maintenance treatments. Whether people are on methadone or hormone therapy, this information is highly sensitive and must be protected
And finally, what PDMPs mean practically for health care providers' work flow. PDMP data is presented with little context and could negatively influence how providers treat patients. @Liz_Chiarello has been studying how numerous stakeholders use PDMPs. filtermag.org/how-helpful-or…
A full copy of this PDMP report can be found on the Health in Justice Action Lab site: healthinjustice.org/prescription-d… and here: docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/1367d9_215…
Lastly, the lab will be submitting a public comment in response to the Notice of Proposed Rule Making by @HHSGov re: 42 CFR Part 2 with a focus on PDMPs. More details here: hhs.gov/about/news/201…
