The morning of 9/11, one of the guys I went to Saratoga with each summer called another member of the group to say he was on a high floor in the South Tower and it didn’t look good. He didn’t make it out.
News of that phone call quietly spread through our friend group.

Even now, eighteen years later, we have never talked about the contents of that call.
It carries the kind of radioactive pain you encase in cement and leave to very slowly decay all on its own - if it ever does.

I should add, I wasn’t particularly close with Tom. He was a good friend of good friends. His phone call was to his best friend.
