Speaking of Amphibia, I recently gave a talk to some of the crew on how I do revisions! Revisions are a crucial part of the animation process, and I thought it'd be fun to share what I know. Thread, start!
Of course I had to insert my frogsona, fight me.
This is the big ol' checklist. I recommend revisionists print this page out and have it by their work stations so they don't forget a step!
I actually helped revise the episode on the tadpole screen, I love his character so much.
For people who don't use storyboard pro, here it is!
Timers will be able to multiply poses, so you don't have to repeat them in the board! Just label those arm flails and move on.
Most productions plan out camera moves with the camera tool. I've been on some shows where they individually pose out the camera for every frame, please don't.
Be sure to capture Hop Pop's silver-fox good looks, or you'll be fired.
I remember when I was posting boards from Star vs, fans would make fake storyboard "leaks" and added the NP sign on them to make them look more like my boards. But you can't fool me. P a t h e t i c.
The hookup thing- If say a character has their hand raised in one shot, and then the next frame they're not, change it! Consistency is good.
ADD YOUR BACKGROUNDS IN YOU LAZY COWARDS, IT MAKES MY JOB HARDER.
This is the step I think people know the least about! Revisions are one of the final steps before a board gets sent to the timer team, and then it's sent overseas for animation.
Oh god bubble crowds...the very least you can do is number/label them but the more info you can give the better. If you don't draw a crowd, someone else has to.
Some technical stuff.
I'm not joking, relabel your shit. Also, please don't board an episode in one scene instead of separating everything shot by shot. I will hunt you down.
That's it! I might add more to this later, but this was the end of the presentation. Revisions are very challenging, and I hope that people find this useful!
Also thank you @Radrappy for letting me post this, and by request yes I will upload this doodle I did in the margins of that one episode
@Radrappy Ah, another thing. I notice now more and more board artists like to add a lot of antics and inbetween poses to their boards. These look cool and make the boards seem almost animated, but it's actually a pain in the neck for most timers I know. Here's the reason:
Overseas animators will follow the board religiously, and they don't always have the same sense of timing in mind as the board artists. Tiny little micro-poses can make the final animation look really laggy and odd.
I'm guilty of doing this! I know it's fun to do animation stuff and make your board presentation look super cool, but it isn't always a good idea. Just a thought peeps!
ALSO ALSO ALSO: when drawing your backgrounds, draw them in grey please. DO NOT DRAW IN BLACK AND LOWER THE OPACITY. Board artists, changing background opacity is such a pain in the ass. It also makes a board file much bigger, so save yourself some trouble!
I feel I should dedicate this whole thread to Shaun Cashman who isn’t on twitter, but was my first supervisor and taught me so much about revising when I first started in animation. The sweetest, nicest man, and my office dad. Love you man!
