🤓 there's a persistent claim that electricity retailers buy householders' excess solar for nearly nothing and sell it at a huge profit to other customers.

this is (generally) not true. 1/5
these days, in *most* of the country, the solar feed in tariff is determined periodically by an independent third party and is based on a calculation of the value of the electricity in the wholesale market. 2/5
(in victoria there's even a slight premium paid for solar in recognition of the "social cost of carbon" — ie. a slim carbon price.). 3/5
imagine that coles buys field tomatoes wholesale for $1.10/kg & sells them in store for $2.50/kg.

imagine that you grow tomatoes in your garden & have a few spare. it'd be lovely if your local coles would buy your excess — but don't whinge when they 'only' pay you $1.10/kg. 4/5
yes, there _are_ some parts of the country where solar homeowners are getting a raw deal — but if you're getting paid 8-11¢/kWh, you're being paid a fair value for your solar.

…and it's pretty cool that there's a guaranteed market for the surplus you produce. 5/5
