With @PSEGNews announcing today a commitment to cut CO2 emissions from electricity operations 80% below 2005 levels by 2046 and a "vision" for net-zero emissions by 2050 (roi-nj.com/2019/07/25/ind…), it is worth taking stock of major US utility commitments to deep CO2 cuts...

Make no mistake where the #electricity sector is headed. More & more of the largest utilities in the country have committed to deep emissions cuts that put them on a path to >80% reductions in CO2 emissions and/or 100% clean, carbon-free electricity by 2050 (or sooner)!
Several other big investor-owned utilities I reviewed, incl. @Entergy @Exelon @TheAESCorp @PGE4Me @SCE and @PSETalk have commitments that will see their emissions decline as well, but they fall short of committing to deep decarbonization of 100% clean, carbon-free energy by 2050.
To preserve our #climate, CO2 emissions cuts must be accelerated & the U.S. economy as a whole should be on a path to 100% clean, carbon-free energy by 2050. Carbon-free #electricity is the linchpin, so these commitments are key. Time to build on them & aim for #100x50.

@daveregrets @MarkVinPaul @gregorytcarlock @noahqk @hal_harvey Yes a carbon tax is moderately progressive when distribution is measured across lifetime income/expenditures rather than annual income (which isn't as good a measure of economic security/standing).
@daveregrets @MarkVinPaul @gregorytcarlock @noahqk @hal_harvey This is especially true when accounting for automatic adjustments on cost or living indexed benefits. Social security payments, food stamps, etc all go up when costs of energy/goods go up, so if carbon price drives prices, indexed benefits and transfers also go up. Important.
@daveregrets @MarkVinPaul @gregorytcarlock @noahqk @hal_harvey So I pretty strongly disagree @MarkVinPaul that a carbon tax is not a fair or appropriate way to raise revenue for a *portion* of the expenditures and investments we need to make. Progressive income taxes and smart use of debt instruments round out the package for me.

The bill is notable and important contribution to efforts to build national consensus for serious clean energy and climate policy action. Here's why I like it...
1. There's broad consensus electricity is the linchpin in any effort to confront #climatechange, not only because it's responsible for ~30% of US CO2, but also because electrifying more energy use in transportation, buildings, & industry is key to decarbonize those sectors too.

She asked me to comment & sent the paper which I was able to read over the weekend. I shared some concerns.
I am -- and encourage others to be -- very hesitant to treat this study as the definitive word on the cost of RPS policies. In particular, I urge any policy makers or stakeholders in policy debates to treat these findings WITH CAUTION at this stage.

Net-zero emissions by 2050 in the U.S. is about 20 years too late.

To stay below 1.5 degrees C we need net-zero GLOBAL emissions by 2050 at the VERY LATEST.

Beto's climate plan isn't consistent with climate science.
In order to meet the 1.5 degree C climate goal, the U.S. needs to have net zero emissions by around 2030, and net negative emissions by 2050.

Beto's plan would be too little too late.

It's great that he's talking about climate, but we must do better.

The overall target of France's strategy for #energy and #climate is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through cutting GHG emissions down significantly and also increasing carbon sinks
France wants to cut #CO2 emissions down to 227 Mt in 10 years by cutting final #energy consumption 14% and primary #energy from #fossilfuels by 35%. Also, increasing #renewable heating and doubling the #electricity from renewables. Note: transport emissions vanish by 2050.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
