So a few random midnight thoughts on state coercion, legislative complacency, and our general lack of curiosity.

#NFIU
One day before the PEPT judgement, a letter was purportedly circulated by @NigFiu asking banks to provide information on the bank accounts of (among others) senior members of the Judiciary.

No details of any member of the Executive Branch was requested.

Coincidence? Lol.
AFTER judgement was delivered in favour of Baba, the spokesperson of the NFIU says this:

“In line with its powers as provided in the NFIU Act, the Unit already has access to details of all bank accounts...and does not therefore, need to write to banks asking for the same info.”
Maybe even worse, was this statement by the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Benjamin Kalu, an APC lawmaker in the House of Representatives.

A lawmaker.
Now, ladies and gentlemen, let me refer you to clauses 16 & 17 of the NFIU Act, 2018.
That the NFIU would try to usurp powers the law does not grant it is worrisome. That they would lie about it is doubly so.

How can elected lawmakers not know their own laws? A random guy comes to tell us they have the power to spy on us without court orders, and no one protests?
The International Day of Democracy is over.

In Nigeria, democracy died the moment Baba was sworn into office.
