Just came across this article from National Review (9/24/63) about the Kennedy administration bill that became the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Go ahead and add this to all the pieces I included here:
James J. Kilpatrick was one of the leaders of the Virginia Commission on Constitutional Government, an organization created by the state to lead its "massive resistance" to the Brown decision.

And his NR article was originally a CCG pamphlet.

Kilpatrick was also vice-chair of the Coordinating Committee for Fundamental American Freedoms, which ran this full-page ad against the civil rights bill in early 1964.

The chair was William Loeb, publisher of the conservative Manchester Union-Leader.

Pretty significant. "I Rode with the KKK" got the IRS to revoke the Klan's tax-exempt status which was a big financial blow, while he also humiliated them publicly (especially when he got the Superman radio show to do an arc with them as the villains).

Here in the United States, banks are required to meet the credit needs of the communities where they do business, under the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. Penalties for violating the act can include temporarily freezing a bank's asset growth or denying all merger requests.
Some consider the law to be the last great policy of the Civil Rights era, in line with the Civil Rights Act (1964), Voting Rights Act (1965), Fair Housing Act (1968), Equal Credit Opportunity Act (1974). Notice the gradual expansion from political rights to economic rights?
The Community Reinvestment Act or CRA went beyond merely outlawing "redlining" -- the practice of banks avoiding making loans to certain neighborhoods with a clear racial pattern as a result of systematic policies and real estate industry practices. nybooks.com/articles/2018/…

Article by James Ho---one of those cited in the law professors' letter---that shuts down the argument that the "subject to the jurisdiction" clause of the 14th limits birthright citizenship.

If I get some time today I'll use this thread to properly state my alternative argument.
1/THREAD:Here I will lay out why, as a matter of original public meaning, the text of the 14th Amendment does not compel the United States to hew to birthright citizenship (jus soli). This view is supported by the text of the citizenship clause, the structure of the 14th Am., and
2/the evident original intent of the drafter and ratifiers. And while precedent currently poses a bar, that precedent can be avoided because it does not address the pertinent text, and in any event is poorly reasoned and should be overturned.
