We’re human. There will always be people we struggle with negative feelings toward for whatever reason, whether offense, hurt, resentment, rivalry or maybe they annoy us. We just don’t like them. But here’s the thing. Our natural inclination is to enlist company in our dislike...
Unless we thoroughly deal with it before God, watch and see if we don’t do exactly this: we cannot resist, whether consciously or not, sharing our negativity about them, maybe one person at a time or maybe a group, because we love to fellowship in our dislike with people we like.
On my mind because my AM Bible reading right now is Esther. This AM, Ch 3. Haman resents Mordecai because he won’t bow down to him. (That’ll preach right there, leaders.) Resentment has a ravenous appetite. He decides it’s not enough to hate just him. He must hate all like him.
In order to really be empowered in his hate, he needs to enlist those with more power. So he goes to the king. Haman can’t be overly obvious with his selfish motives so he makes it all about the king. It works. It often does. Notice how we often do a form of this same approach...
When enlisting people to dislike the same people we dislike, we have to engage them on their own selfish level. Have to make it clear why they should dislike them, too. Of course, this has to be wrapped in a cloud of subtly. The end result (or perhaps GOAL)? They suffer loss.
->
It can be loss of friends, respect, reputation, position, job, opportunity, home, privilege, liberty or even life. And God sees. Let us not dream we will keep our resentments, dislikes and hates to ourselves. We’ll take them to God for treatment or we will spread them to others.
