This is how DHS, a federal agency of the U.S.A, mocks their unrolling the next step in the war against immigrants and over 42,000 asylum seekers barely surviving on the Southern Border 🔽
Unless I missed it, the only BIG immigration news today is the El Salvador UNsafe Third Country Agreement, that was signed in front of camera (appears to barely 2 pages long) but noone has seen. Admin is calling it 'A Cooperation Agreement' same as Guatemala agreement from July.
@DHSMcAleenan dodged questions & mumbled something like US will help El Salvador build out its asylum system in cooperation w/ @UNRefugeeAgency. Now this is puzzling since the UN agency only involvement w the current refugee crisis on the So border is the "Voluntary Return' prog
If the idea is that ppl will be returned under the guise of 'free bus ride back to El Salvador' it will not likely to be very effective or implemented effectively soon. What it will do is move back some of the people currently waiting in various MX cities along the border
But since neither Guatemala nor El Salvador have functioning asylum processing process the same "returned" ppl will just re-start the trek north as soon as they can borrow enough money to pay smugglers. This is just a photo op and pre-election stunt at the expense of human life.
If you ask me, the really, REALLY big immigration new of the last 48 hrs news cycle is scoop by @mollymotoole that Border Patrol agents have already started to conduct credible fear interview, w/ the squadron of BP 'adjudicating' officers rapidly expanding
At the difference of the UN "voluntary return program', this fundamentally ups the game. BP agents are trained to find inadmissibility & refer for prosecution, no conduct non-adversarial interviews to uncover facts relevant to fear of return.
In the few thousands Q&A conducted by BP I have seen over the yrs I dont remember ever seeing BP ask an asylum seeker "do you fear returning to X country"; it is always 1/ "Why did you come or attempt to enter or presented at POE" or 2/non-citizen affirm saying I want to apply
With a 60 days "training" you are NOT gonna change the way carrier BP officers see asylum seekers. For them they are all just "illegal entrants" and will remain such after their complete the '60 day' Mickey Mouse asylum refresher.
This is why they want to put BP officers in charge of credib fear interviews: w/out much probing & coaching they think 'remove first, ask questions after [& only if attorney gets involved]. Not surprised that as @mollymotoole reports the denial rates after few days is over 50%
The end game is that with skyrocketing denied credible fears interviews couple with the traditional unforgiving IJ review of same, we will get 235b orders of removal: final, sealed, & delivered in less than 90 days (incl appeal).
The next time those returnees make the trek back north to the US border, they will not need to even be placed in MPP their 235b order will get reinstated, they will be detained (CoreCivics & GEO gotta make some $ in all this), then deported right back.
Stephen Miller has figured out that for Central Americans this repeated up north trek will just become impossible for ppl to borrow $ to finance. On this one, unfortunately he has hit the nail on.
