The American Jewish Congress released a statement on May 8, 2023 on Bashar Al Assad rejoining the Arab League. This is a good time to recall why this is not a good idea after #Assad attended an Arab Summit in #SaudiArabia over the weekend. Read this #thread⬇️/1

The #AmericanJewishCongress is alarmed that efforts are underway to rehabilitate #BasharAssad. Before any normalization, Assad needs to talk to the opposition, eliminate #Iran presence in #Syria, and initiate a political transition in accordance with UNSCR 2254. /2
Sharing our concerns about rehabilitating #BasharAlAssad is more than half of Syria’s population displaced by #Assad’s actions over the past decade, says @JackRosenNYC, President of #AmericanJewishCongress. /3

This tweet by a retired wealthy industrialist with too much time on his hands and no idea what to do with it illustrates what is wrong with India.

He extols the virtues of a clay water storage unit, the surahi, from the mid-20th century.

Of course, while he lives in unimaginable luxury, the likes of which we can't dream of.

It's a foolish comparison, because the surahi can only store and cool water by a few degrees, whereas the fridge can cool anything, preserve food, and make ice (needed for his scotch).

But that didn't stop Indian twitterati from going ga-ga over his tweet. Why?

Because if there's one thing guaranteed to give you applause in India today, it is hearkening to the past.
Our grandparents had the most wonderful life. Our country was great in the good old days.

#UN in Deep Crisis - Russian FM Lavrov

Sergey Lavrov opened his speech as chair of the #UNSC by declaring that the rules-based order... actually has... NO rules

Instead, unilateral sanctions have paralysed supply chains and seen international laws manipulated Image
🇷🇺's top diplomat went on to say the West has instead self-proclaimed dominance across the globe.

Here are some key points:

🔸 #AUKUS deal an extension of #NATO into Asian Pacific

🔸 #Washington embraced destroying current architecture of intl relations
🔸 🇺🇸 intervention in Indo-Pacific is to deter 🇨🇳 & isolate 🇷🇺

🔸 Complex of superiority dominant in minds of EU officials

🔸 🇺🇸 and 🇯🇵 remain silent on who bombed #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki, and the use of depleted #Uranium in #Yugoslavia

Sum. of Dr.@Susanrosepower’s comments (Head of Research @alhaq_org) on the consequences of ICJ advisory opinion & #state_responsibility, during our webinar:On the Table of the ICJ: The Legality/Illegality of #Israeli_Occupation &the Subsequent Int’l Responsibility
Article 14 of the Draft articles on Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts state that the international #obligations on a state committing a continuing crime arise only for the period during which the act continues.
According to IL Commission, an example of continuing unlawful act is unlawful occupation . Therefore, #Israel is responsible for the consequences of the #occupation as long as it continues, even if it was deemed to be an act of self-defence initially.

🧵1/20: On Russia: “The Roots of Russia”, written by Dr. Lev Dobriansky (1918- 2008), a renowned Professor of Economics at Georgetown University, and former US Ambassador to the Bahamas, published, courtesy by (US) Naval Institute Proceedings-April 1963, tells us:
🧵 Dobriansky was US-born son of Ukrainian immigrants, staunch anti-Communist. Amongst nuggets that his article brings out, over a half-century ago, when Russia already dominated USSR, which in turn dominated much of world: Russians did not constitute a majority of the USSR.
🧵3/20: Even back in 1897, 60% of subjects of Russian Empire were not Russian. Lenin himself said “Czarist Russia & Russians constitute 43 per cent of total population, i.e. a minority, while non-Russian nationalities constituted 57 per cent”.

Can #russia actually be removed or, at least, suspended from the #UNSC?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer : it’s complicated (shockingly).🧵 ⬇️
1. Firstly but crucially, the inability to suspend/remove any member underlines a bigger, structural issue:

That the #UNSC is grossly outdated and doesn’t reflect the modern balance of power.
It was formed after WWII, comprising 15 members and the main allies being granted P5 (permanent) status.

But that word means just that.

That they are permanent and there being no mechanism written into the UN Charter to remove them.

-All serious and conscientious members of global community have a role and responsibility to call out international terrorism, especially of a cross-border nature.
-"The Indian UT of Jammu and Kashmir has borne the brunt of such a terrorist campaign for decades. Foreign nationals have been victims there, as also in other parts of India. #UNSC and #FATF are still pursuing Pakistan-based terrorists involved in the horrific 26/11 attacks."

we're buying generators and portable gas burners. cause when you are fighting Russia, you have to be ready for the most despicable attacks against civilians. Russian propagandists already talk about how they must pressure us into submission by hunger, cold ad darkness. 👇
Meanwhile, Putin said the attacks on power facilities in Kharkiv, Poltava, and the attack on the dam in Kryvyi Rih, were "a warning". So current #UNSC member basically says: If you keep winning on the war front, we're going to commit mass war crimes against civilians
everything feels surreal. Like the Winter the #GameOfThrones characters were so afraid of. Yet, we know how it ended for the ice king. BTW, Winterisation is also one of the main topics at the UN this assembly. feels like I would be writing like hell.

Tigray authorities say they are ready to abide by an immediate cessation of hostilities, to create a conducive atmosphere for AU-led talks under *mutually-acceptable" mediators, with int'l observers to help build trust, instill confidence in the process & support implementation.
These are all fairly standard components of peace processes. The Govt of Ethiopia has been resistant to calls for int'l observers, however. Will they accept them now? This would notionally require granting them access to Tigray & conflict-affected parts of Amhara & Afar.
What Tigray authorities are proposing was presumably part of the discussions between AU & US officials in recent days, and appears to be the result of the reported talks in Djibouti.

I have just addressed the #UNSC and launched a proposal to create a Nuclear Safety and Security Protection Zone (NSSPZ) in #Zaporizhzhya. This is based on the findings from our mission to the power plant there, outlined in our new report.
From the very beginning of the conflict, we've monitored the nuclear safety and security situation of #Ukraine’s nuclear facilities. Through the @IAEAIEC, we've been in contact with Ukraine's Regulatory Inspectorate and have shared frequent updates online.
Through the Support & Assistance Mission to #Zaporizhzhya (ISAMZ), we've established a presence at the #ZNPP that will help to stabilise the situation. It'll also enable us to closely monitor the situation at the site, and to receive direct, fast and reliable information.

#Ukraine informed IAEA that a back-up power line between #Zaporizhzhya NPP & a thermal power station was deliberately disconnected to extinguish a fire. The line was not damaged & for safety #ZNPP is receiving electricity from its sole operating reactor.
Also today, four IAEA experts left #ZNPP as planned after several days of essential safety, security & safeguards work. Two others remain as part of a continuing presence at the site.
Director General @rafaelmgrossi will on Tuesday issue a report about the safety, security and safeguards situation in #Ukraine — including findings from his mission to the #ZNPP — and later the same day brief the @UN Security Council (#UNSC) about the mission to the plant.

East African leaders have agreed to assemble troops to combat armed groups in the eastern Democratic Republic of #Congo #DRC.

What is this joint force and what are its objectives?

@PMvandeWalle takes a close look in our latest Q&A.

The East African Community (EAC) @jumuiya is composed of #DRCongo 🇨🇩, #Tanzania 🇹🇿, #Kenya 🇰🇪, #Burundi 🇧🇮, #Rwanda 🇷🇼, #SouthSudan 🇸🇸 & #Uganda 🇺🇬.

The EAC’s joint force was designed to respond to the rampant insecurity in eastern DRC, a serious concern for the entire region.
Cyclic violence, displacement and insecurity due to the presence of armed groups has been plaguing the region for almost 30 years.

Yet an actual deployment of a regional force is unprecedented.…

I caught up with the end of this yesterday - and this hearing is an alternative, & possibly better explanation for the rushed and botched roll out of the new US Africa Strategy.
China is comprehensively outplaying the US in international diplomacy. Here is China's "Concept Note" referred to at the beginning of the session.…
A charitable interpretation of rushed release of the new US Africa Strategy (…) is that they wanted to release something that is alligned to the proposals being discussed in this UNSC Chinese Presidency event held on the same day.
