THREAD: A few months ago, many of you stepped up and helped my wife pay for bariatric surgery.

She's currently embarking on a new challenge, and she's raising money for @StJude Children's Hospital.

The surgery was a tremendous success, and she's already lost over 120 pounds.

She's started running to maintain her healthy lifestyle, and she is currently training for the Rock N Roll San Antonio Half Marathon.

As part of the entrance fee, she is holding a $500 fundraiser to support @StJude, as it is a cause that means a lot to her.

If anyone is able to help her meet that goal and save lives in the process, it would mean the world to her.

What a TERRIBLE idea.

We need a vast expansion of subsidies to construct high-density, cheap housing and transfer payments to help low-income people afford rent. But rent control is universally viewed as a failure by economists — you can't make housing cheaper just by saying so.
Study after study has shown that rent control doesn't make housing more affordable. It cuts investment in both new housing stock, which makes housing more expensive, and in maintaining old housing stock, which degrades the quality of housing for people in controlled units.
The only benefit to rent control is that in certain circumstances, it prevents gentrification and keeps developers from razing diverse neighborhoods, by killing the ROI for it.

But that is obviously a very local, case by case effect. It should not be a blanket nationwide rule.

Neither Iowa nor Ohio have ceased being battlegrounds.

This is an incredibly lazy take and it isn't supported by any polling data. Trump is underwater and trailing or tied with Democrats in both states.
OH has always leaned red at the presidential level, ever since the GOP has existed. There isn't polling data that suggests Trump's win in 2016 is a fundamental shift in the state beyond where it normally is.

As for IA, no state has had a harder approval swing against Trump.
Also, both states' performance in the midterms suggest Democrats are still competitive. Sherrod Brown won by more than he did in 2012. Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne both flipped Republican seats.

To claim these states are out of play is absurd.

This is a real microcosm of how old, rich conservatives live in a bubble and have no idea how the real world works.

Varney says this is bad because it would slow growth in retirement accounts. But far fewer people own retirement accounts than would be helped by these reforms.
And why is it that so few Americans can own retirement accounts?

Because they can't afford to save money. Due to low wages, loss of worker rights, decline of communities, environmental disasters — all the things Warren wants to redirect corporate profits to address!
Now, reasonable people can agree or disagree on the finer points of the Accountable Capitalism Act. It is pretty sweeping and vague in what it directs corporations to consider.

But at the very least, we should mandate employee codetermination and ban or tax stock buybacks.

This is so much bulldust. I will not have reading snobbery. My husband read “nothing but comics” like so many kids I’ve worked with. How did he do? Masters in Optical Electronics and currently working at high level in sub-sea equipment design. Some more examples below... #thread
Some examples of the outcome of unconventional readers (i.e #NotNovels) I taught a boy to read using atlases, and he only ever read those at school. Today he’s an international pilot.
I taught an illiterate child (who also had anger and low self-esteem issues) how to read using only the @BeanoOfficial - last year he passed his GCSEs.
