Neither Iowa nor Ohio have ceased being battlegrounds.

This is an incredibly lazy take and it isn't supported by any polling data. Trump is underwater and trailing or tied with Democrats in both states.
OH has always leaned red at the presidential level, ever since the GOP has existed. There isn't polling data that suggests Trump's win in 2016 is a fundamental shift in the state beyond where it normally is.

As for IA, no state has had a harder approval swing against Trump.
Also, both states' performance in the midterms suggest Democrats are still competitive. Sherrod Brown won by more than he did in 2012. Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne both flipped Republican seats.

To claim these states are out of play is absurd.
