My best friend from high school is a master teacher in a segregated, high-poverty @WaterlooSchools. I visited when I was home last week and told the kids I was buying each of them the book of their choice. They were so excited and my bf just sent me these. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This pic makes me particularly happy because I recommended the Harriet Tubman graphic novel and this baby girl on the left took me up on it.
My friend, Sheritta Stokes, even created these awesome labels for the books the children would bring home. Only five of her kids are on grade level but they were so excited to get to choose their own books and couldn’t wait to read them.
I hear so often — even from educators — that some kids “want to learn” and others don’t. I’ve never met a child who didn’t want to learn but I’ve certainly met many who struggle to. She is a teacher who believes in all of her kids and I am grateful to know she’s teaching them.

I have some very sad news about a family member that I need to share. My dearest one, my black, faux-wood grained, Hyundai Sonata died this weekend. She was 16 years old. When I bought her in 2003, she was only the second new car I had ever owned--a position she maintains today.
2003 was such a momentous year for me. I graduated from grad school. I got married that year. Got my first full-time journalism job, which I worked alongside a part-time gig selling mattresses in order to pay my bills. My gleaming brand-new Hyundai seemed like such a luxury.
I had upgraded from my Kia Sephia and she had a tape deck AND a CD player and this fancy cupholder armrest in the back seat and if you squinted hard, she looked like a Jaguar, and, well, she was a nice as a Jaguar to me.

I’ve been saying for years that the reason so many white reporters ignored school segregation for so long is because their children benefited from it and they preferred to maintain it. Welp, here you go. You identify yourself as a reporter in the FIRST LINE for a reason.
This is also why the idea of objectivity is *bullshit.* You think the views of someone who works in Baltimore, lives in Howard County and opposes this school integration plan doesn’t impact political coverage?
And they think the media is left wing. Not when it comes to school Integration.

This amazing Philadelphia Public School teacher had her students read my #1619Project essay on black people's role in perfecting democracy and then write me response letters. I read them last night coming back on the train. It was remarkable to see how students engaged with it.
Each student included a brief bio and a photo and then discussed what struck them most about the essay. I was transfixed reading how the essay shifted their thinking about the history they've learned and their perceptions of black people and themselves as black Americans.
It was thrilling witnessing the way they linked parts of my essay to their own lives, and to life in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, but a place that makes so many of their lives so hard. And it brought tears to my eyes when some wrote that I made them proud.

Week 2 SEC & ACC Thread:
Wake @ Rice (+19/58.5) Two played last year and Wake won 56-24. Deceptive scoreline though. Only 414-370 yardage edge for Wake, but 6.8-4.9 YPP edge. 137 plays so pace wasn't great, mainly due to Rice hogging it & Wake hitting big plays. Dortch 4 TDs w Hartman at QB n first start
Wake now has better QB and realize what capable of in air. They were still 17-20-243-4-1 last year, but that should be higher this year. Wake won great battle last week. Defense still rough, run game is bleh, but they are gonna go fast and stress teams via air and w QB run game

The following days since winning the student council electing and being sworn into the tresorial seat were amazing. Jaemin felt a little more powerful than he already was.
A lot of his juniors would always greet him every time he passes by, but the number of them drastically increased in just a short amount of time.
As expected, those little minions are all over him, which means he has more people to control and manipulate into doing things that would benefit him. However, there’s been one person that’s bothering him: Lee Jeno.

Last week I told you a little story of how pleased I was with a group of young players and how even when losing, a lot, but learning along the way made me as proud of a group as I've ever been. We'll call that one measuring success in a different way.
Today this same group blew me away - yes we won for the first time ever - but that is only a footnote to the story of perseverance and courage, a strong word, but the right one that this group demonstrated today. Final result 1-0 but the true impact immeasurable.
It's day two of a tournament, our fourth and final game of a long hot weekend and the game is scheduled on the biggest field in the tournament and it's turf. Probably the only game we'll play on turf this year - a first ever for some and others a second or third.
