A bad take on impeachment by George Will. Better than David Brooks' really really bad take on impeachment but still bad. Mentions 3 reasons why it might be good...but then returns to a political calculus to dismiss. washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-b…
His reference to the "squalor" of Trump's Ukraine behavior is not only classic Will (the condescension of the trying-too-hard punching-above his weight intellectual), it misses the minor issues of threat to national security, an ally, our standing, and the rule of law.
Why are all the one time law-and-order and values advocates among the so-called GOP intelligentsia (Dept. of Oxymorons) so dismissive of the corrosive effect of Trump daily on our rule of law and institutions or his appalling values and their impact on the country?

Those who dragged their feet on impeachment were not playing 3D chess. They were playing politics, counting votes, igoring duty & damaging our system by minimizing crimes into political differences. Now, they embrace impeachment simply because it is politically impossible not to.
There is a danger however, in buying into their explanations of their past inaction. Because they are used to justify narrowing the impeachment effort so narrow that many grave abuses will go uninvestigated & unpunished. The precedent this will set will damage us for yrs to come.
Impeach. But don't play the other side's game and impeach for the politics of it. Impeach because crimes were committed against the Constitution, the president's oath of office was violated and there is a conspiracy afoot to set the president above the law.

An imp't subtext of this week's revelations is that it confirms that given the great power conferred by the Constitution on a president to conduct foreign policy, it matters if the president is a mobster. It matters if he is immoral. It matters if he doesn't care about the US.
It matters if he is inexperienced. This seems obvious, but it was not to enough Americans to get him elected. Putin knew it though and that's why he supported Trump--because his goal was to diminish America and we have never been so diminished so quickly than these past 3 yrs.
To put it another way, it is not that Trump's foreign policy has been so ineffective, achieving almost nothing. It is that it has been so damaging to the U.S....and we are only just starting to learn of his private conduct and deals with other world leaders and their great cost.

Watergate occurred when I was a teenager. But I remember vividly that the mood at the time was different from now. As the investigation continued, it became clear that profound issues were at stake: the Constitution, our democracy, the presidency, the rule of law.
Those words get used a lot today. And there is no question but that the stakes are every bit as high or higher thanks to the serial abuses of Trump and his supporters and the specter posed by Trumpism, a malevolent, hate-driven, racist, nationalist movement as destructive...
...as any we have seen in our country's history. Trump has already shown a disregard for the institutions of the country and our values that surpasses by far Nixon's criminal enterprises. He seeks power for himself, to satisfy his greed and his ego.

Several vaguely-sourced articles claim @RepJerryNadler privately disagrees with @SpeakerPelosi over #impeachment. If #Nadler's team thinks that makes him look principled, they're wrong. It just shows he knows what's right but won't do it. Deeply irresponsible.
#Nadler has represented me for years. I respect him. He's been good on most issues. But two serious breaches have alarmed me:

1. Going after Ilhan Omar.

2. Failing to wield his power to hold Trump accountable.

These reflect an inability to properly confront GOP extremism.
Two candidates are in the race for #NY10, @Lindsey_Boylan and @amandapfrankel. Similarly, @ShahidForChange is running against #Pelosi.

We need MORE people to run for office in a healthy democracy. No rep. should "own" a district. If they're popular, they'll win reelection.

Vigorous #impeachment discussion yesterday between polls and elections expert @NateSilver538 (con) and former Harry Reid person @AJentleson (pro). The subject is worth a thread.
2. As with most issues before Congress, substance and politics are closely related but distinguishable. As to substance, the argument -- persuasive to me -- is that obstruction of justice, contacts with Russians seeking to influence a US election, corruption and the rest...
3...will do mortal damage to American democracy if tolerated. Not proceeding toward impeachment proceedings means tolerating all of these things, though it is possible to deceive oneself on that point. The political argument @NateSilver538 makes is about American voters.

It's the same logic they use against God. "If God is all-powerful and bad things happen, he can't be good".
But austerity was a UK political choice pressured by a financial crash. Not the EU.
Decades of neglecting non-metropolitan areas in the UK. Again, UK political choice.
The "This bad thing happened while we were in the EU, therefore the EU is either bad or unhelpful" is one of the dumbest arguments out there.
Those bad things also weren't stopped by the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere etc... but I'm pretty sure removing it wouldn't help.
Oh and because I mentioned God, I should probably clarify...
When I was a Christian my answer to that was: If there was literally zero suffering in the world and we knew we'd be totally OK no matter what, not even boredom, nobody would do anything; we literally wouldn't move.
