It's the same logic they use against God. "If God is all-powerful and bad things happen, he can't be good".
But austerity was a UK political choice pressured by a financial crash. Not the EU.
Decades of neglecting non-metropolitan areas in the UK. Again, UK political choice.
The "This bad thing happened while we were in the EU, therefore the EU is either bad or unhelpful" is one of the dumbest arguments out there.
Those bad things also weren't stopped by the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere etc... but I'm pretty sure removing it wouldn't help.
Oh and because I mentioned God, I should probably clarify...
When I was a Christian my answer to that was: If there was literally zero suffering in the world and we knew we'd be totally OK no matter what, not even boredom, nobody would do anything; we literally wouldn't move.
