Being nonbinary isn't a trend. It's an exodus.
I didn't hear the term "nonbinary" until I was in my 30's. I didn't realize that existing outside of the gender binary was even an option before that. Pretty soon after realizing there was an exit, I was running for that door.

The explosion in people-you-know coming out nonbinary isn't because it's "trendy." We're not going to slink back into girl and boy forms in a few months, disappearing like Peplum tops or fidget spinners. There's just A LOT of people who've felt trapped by gender all their lives.
I'm not trying disrespect binary genders. If you are binary, and being a man or woman feels good to you, that's great! But given the history and the oppression associated with gender, is it really so surprising that many of us want don't want to do gender anymore?
We are saying: you don't get to make assumptions about us anymore, based on our genitalia. We are not complying with your dress codes or unequal codes of conduct. We are not sticking to our portion of the rainbow. We demand to be treated as human, full stop.
We're not going away. In fact, we're swelling our ranks faster than you can imagine. So if you're cis, you might as well get on board with memorizing pronouns, because that reluctance is going to age BADLY (like democrat opposition to same-sex marriage in the 00's, yeesh).
And if you think YOU might like to be nonbinary, but aren't sure you're "enough" of...whatever, I say, screw that self-gate-keeping! The only requirement for not having a gender is WANTING to not have a gender. Welcome to the party! What are your pronouns?

I’m just gonna respond to all of em here. Look, you claim to be “genderfree” but you’re obsessed with the binary! You’re saying “Get in the woman box. You can be whatever you want in there! The box is meaningless!” Yet you DEMAND everyone get in 1 of 2 boxes.
If gender is nothing and meaningless, then why do you insist we call ourselves by the gendered labels YOU deem appropriate? Why do you insist we use pronouns that reaffirm, in every sentence someone speaks about us, the gender we were assigned at birth?
And you pretend to be grounded in science and common sense, but your science is BAD. Gender and sex are not the same thing and BOTH are spectrums. Your black-and-white flag & insistence that sex is binary erases & does violence to intersex people.
And yes, gender is a social construct; that doesn’t mean it’s MEANINGLESS. Race, heterosexuality, and religions are also social constructs that are extremely powerful in determining we experience the world. Gender has influenced how we’ve been treated since we were in the womb!
This gender binary—this insistence that the MOST important line dividing humans is their sex organs—is a tool of kyriarchy. Group people so you can push some down, while raising others. Push & push & push, & a subset—white straight cis Christian males—sit on a very high platform
This construct was exported around the world by European imperialists, violently oppressing, criminalizing, and even exterminating nonbinary, third gender, two-spirit people in non-Western cultures all over the world. Your TERF “activism” is an extension of that legacy.
Your gaslighting tactics can’t disguise it. You initially posture yourself as “concerned” about us, wanting to “dialogue,” but within a comment or two, you’re calling us cowards, entitled, traitors, confused, clowns, and ableist slurs I won’t repeat. You’re bigots.
You hate trans people. You’re obsessed with enforcing a gender binary that has a long history of oppression. And you’re bullies. So like, from the deepest, darkest corners of my trans-as-fuck heart, let me just say: TERFS. FUCK. OFF.
A great book about WHY the science is bad is @angelasaini ‘s INFERIOR. I also found EVOLUTION’S RAINBOW very eye-opening, for a look at all the bad science biologists have used to fit the entire animal kingdom into Jude’s-Christian ideas about sex.
