The holding of Elections, under the 1995 Constitution stems from the "sovereignty of the people" ,under Article 1(4) that the the will & consent of the people on who to govern them and how shall be expressed through REGULAR, FREE & FAIR Elections.

Of emphasis under the said Article are the "Regular, free and fair elections. Regular elections means that elections shall be held periodically, thus holding of election under the Constitution is certain on as and when they shall be held.
Should the #period when a #GeneralElection is held be certain?
Yes the period should be certain under the Const... Art. 67 thus the Electoral Commission is supposed to ensure that Elections are held at #fixedtimes & notified to the public in advance

The last #GeneralElection confirmed to me that the majority of people in the U.K

are either brain dead conformists or sociopathic sadists who like to torture vulnerable people.

I despise working class @Conservatives voters.

They are no different to Hitler's enablers.
They fetishise over the bravery of a past generation who fought two World War's trying to destroy the assholes that working class @Conservatives are.

That populism which enables the wealthiest to divide the poor.

To get the poor to kill others based in a flimsy absurd ideology.
I have no respect, no compassion whatsoever for working class @conservatives voters.

My only enjoyment now will be their self destruction under @Conservatives oppression and stealth #austerity.

We’re deeply disappointed with the results from last night. Congratulations to all those #LibDems who won or kept those seats and commiserations to those who didn’t especially @joswinson 1/4 #GeneralElection
We should now prepare ourselves for 5 more years of Tory government. The NHS is under threat, education is on its knees and Johnson’s Brexit deal threatens to break apart our union. But there is hope... 2/4
Like we’ve said since the referendum, democracy didn’t die on 23rd June 2016. Likewise it hasn’t died on 12th December 2019. We will continue to fight for Britain’s place and relationship with the EU and our vision of an inclusive, liberal society that we’ll get to someday.

Been reliably informed that people respond better to Twitter threads so in the spirit of the future here is my #kentvotes master thread for the #generalelections2019 in Thanet!

More to follow.
Had a quick chat with Lib Dem South Thanet candidate Martyn Pennington, who is “really disappointed for the young people” who may not have been able to vote in the referendum #ExitPolls #kentvotes #GeneralElection2019 @kmtv_kent
North Thanet Green candidate Rob Edwards says he will continue to fight for local issues and that we may be on the cusp of the exit process #kentvotes #GeneralElection2019ً @KMTV_Kent

My voting history. First #GeneralElection I was eligible for was 1992. That was just after the poll tax & I think I wasn't on the register. In 1997 I voted for @Lisa_Lovebucket of the Rainbow Referendum Dream Ticket Connection Party (I had to Google that to get it right)...
... & put a Reclaim The Streets "Never mind the ballots" sticker up in the polling booth. Thru the rest of the New Labour years I spoiled my vote as referenced in the @cartoonkate 'Blame me, I voted Lib Dem" cartoon… In 2015 I looked at how UKIP had...
... shifted the Overton window rightwards, even without winning a seat, so I decided I would vote for a party rather than writing what I thought & felt on the ballot. I voted Green. Neither them nor Labour had a chance in our constituency at that point

After that election...

Hey. We’re new to Twitter. To open our account, we’ve analysed what MPs earned - in addition to their salaries - in the last Parliament. MPs declare such earnings, but in a super unstructured way. So, we’ve written some code to create a neat dataset of all their declarations.
Since the last #GeneralElection, MPs have earned £8.4 million in addition to their parliamentary salary (an average of £12,900 per MP).
Over half of this £8.4million was earned by just 15 MPs.
#BorisJohnson earned the most, nearly £800,000. That’s equivalent to an additional £27,440 a month. The other 14 top-earners were all men too…

1. After much consideration, I have decided to fight this election in the place I call home-Hull West & Hessle

Given the toxic political climate, this was not an easy decision to make, especially given the abuse I received from @UKLabour supporters when standing 2017
2. I feel strongly that Brexiteers have been let down. Especially in so-called safe Labour seats which voted for Brexit.

Your votes have been taken for granted and your wishes dismissed.

Do not be fooled - @UKLabour is determined to ignore the wishes of Brexiteers.
3. Equally, do not be fooled re @Conservatives they have not truly cared about the working classes for decades....

Now that the Brexit Party & the Tories have formed an unholy hard-right pact & Farage helping deliver a parliamentary majority for Boris, we are walking into inevitable disaster.

That's why I call on all Green Party candidates in Lab/Con marginals to not put yourself forward
I appreciate it's difficult and I don't ask this lightly but with so much at stake, our TOP priority should be to stop the Tories by any means necessary.

We simply cannot afford 5 more years of Tory rule with a Trumpian Brexit.
We know what Boris Johnson’s deal means - a victory for oil and gas magnates, greedy pharmaceutical conglomerates and the hedgefund-elite, with job security, environmental protections and workers’ rights at great risk.

A little thread about #GeneralElection (GE) dates

There is still the assumption that a GE is inevitable sooner rather than later in the UK

But when you look into the detail it's more complex than just ASAP is best
First the technicalities: Parliament is dissolved 25 working days before a General Election…

All my calculations are based on that - they are minimum time frames

The additional 14 days foreseen in the Fixed-term Parliaments Act are NOT included
I also assume the law will NOT be changed for this General Election. 25 days is already pretty tight to get everything done (not least overseas ballots), so I think it is fair to work with these deadlines.

Early election under the FTPA defeated again, by 293 to 46. Does BJ have other tricks up his sleeve? No doubt we'll find out soon. Next act is to lock MPs out of Parliament for 5 weeks. #GeneralElection #Commons
(Reminder: a 2/3 majority of all MPs was needed, so that was very very short of the mark.)

With recent events in Westminster, talks of another #Brexit delay have come back. Both UK and EU27 have to unanimously agree to another extension.

What is being said about this in the EU?
1. The EU Commission President-Elect @vonderleyen takes office on 1 Nov. She previously said she would be open to another delay "for a good reason."…
2. An EU source quoted by AFP says if delay comes from a new political situation like elections, or if it's for renegotiating on a new basis which fits the EU's principles, it is likely to be accepted.…

If a #GeneralElection is called, socialists in #Labour can’t afford a “let’s get Labour into power and sort out the politics afterwards” attitude. We all want and need a Labour government, but *what kind of Labour government* matters greatly too.
The 2017 manifesto was a step forward but on issues like immigration it wasn’t qualitatively more radical/left-wing than the 2015 manifesto. Labour’s policy on the police (they’re great, we need more of them) has now been nicked by Johnson. And on many other issues, Labour is >
< still wedded to technocratic tinkering rather than the sweeping socialisation we need to address inequality and confront climate change. For example, Labour should commit to taking banking and finance into total public ownership to fund a massive expansion of renewable energy.

Thread on a chat I just had with @Nigel_Farage on @LBC he got a little angry and hung up on me! Never answered my question give it a retweet

The call went like this;

Me: Hi Nigel could you apologise for calling the EU anti democratic, when you just voted on @vonderleyen.
Nigel: #vonderLeyen was the only candidate, I wouldn't call that democratic!

Me: how many candidates were there for @brexitparty_uk leader?

Nigel: Well I'm the only member so I voted for me!

Me: so undemocraticlly elected by yourself with no other candidates or votes?
Nigel: spluttered anger....

Call ends!

So @Nigel_Farage care to Apologise for your lies? Or hypocricy?

With a #GeneralElection looking more likely I wanted to pre-empt what is likely to be another major attack on Labour by looking in to the way some matters have been reported in the MSM.

2/x #GeneralElection

Antisemitism is a serious matter - and claims of antisemitism should be dealt with quickly and people found guilty expelled.

In this thread I make no excuses - my aim is simply to report how the media have represented the issue.
3/x #GeneralElection

Christian Today (Paul Bayes 23rd March 2018)

The Article CONFLATES vile cases of antisemitism (from right wing) with current Labour. Starts with "imprisoned abusers" then goes on to justify Rabbi Sacks attack on Labour…

How can Corbyn get into Downing St at the next election if one comes soon? Here is my thread looking at what needs to change from the 2017 #GeneralElection when #Labour won 262 seats. /1
To become the largest party, Labour needs to gain around 30 seats. It so happens that there are 29 seats where Labour is in 2nd place less than 3 pts behind the incumbent. 21 are held by the #CONSERVATIVES, 7 by the SNP, 1 by #plaidcymru. /2
To get a working majority, Labour needs to gain 61 seats given Sinn Fein don't take their seats. It so happens there are 62 seats where Labour is in 2nd place less than 7 pts behind the incumbent. 45 are held by the Conservatives, 16 by the SNP, 1 by Plaid Cymru /3
