44 years ago today, 2 October 1975, Seamus Murphy, died in his native Cork. He was an Irish sculptor & stone carver who particularly delighted in producing heads. I am lucky enough to have a bronze head of my Grand-Uncle Connie Neenan, in my office. rte.ie/archives/2017/… His
unique carvings of statues, gravestones, monuments & plaques can be seen around Cork & Ireland, including a signed panel of the four evangelists outside the entrance of the church of Our Lady and Saint John in Carrigaline, Co. Cork. rte.ie/archives/2015/…
He was taught by Daniel
Corkery at St Patrick’s School Gardiners Hill (as was Frank O'Connor), finishing his full-time schooling at the age of twelve, found work as an apprentice sculptor. rte.ie/archives/2015/… He would, go on to become a Royal Hibernian Academy professor of sculpture. In 1944 he
married Maighread Higgins, daughter of the Cork sculptor Joseph Higgins, & had three children; the knitwear designer Bebhinn Marten, the novelist Orla Murphy and the painter & De Dannan member Colm Murphy.His studio/workshop was at Watercourse Road, Blackpool, Cork. @RHAGallery

Today 20 October marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Jack Lynch, “the Real Taoiseach”. His particular role in preserving democratic government in response to the 1969 Arms Crisis is worthy of further study & recognition. After the general election of 1973 T.K.Whitaker, his
trusted confidante, sent him a personal note: “You can look back on your seven years as taoiseach as a period not only of great material and social progress but also of rational evolution of Irish activities, particularly towards the problem of Northern Ireland”. A good Irishman.
He was recognized for this even by opposing politicians.

On 13 October 1494, 525 years ago today, Sir Edward Poynings landed at Howth and immediately summoned a parliament to Drogheda.
Poynings' Law or the Statute of Drogheda later titled "An Act that no Parliament be holden in this Land until the Acts be certified into England", was
a 1494 Act of the Parliament of Ireland which provided that the Irish parliament could not meet until its proposed legislation had been approved both by Ireland's Lord Deputy and Privy Council and by England's monarch and Privy Council. It was a major grievance in 18th-century
Ireland, was amended by the Constitution of 1782, rendered moot by the Acts of Union 1800, and repealed by the Statute Law Revision (Ireland) Act, 1878.

It's been one year since #JamalKhashoggi was brutally murdered.

This is also another sad anniversary for me personally.

My father died 20 years ago today, October 2, 1999.

Rest in peace dad, you wouldn't recognize this world. 🙏🏽
Here is a video of my father Arthur a few years before he passed. He had a TV show in Lebanon about environmentalism, filmed in the small mountain village of Lehfed, where my ancestors, Maronite Christians, are from.

Arthur Daou went from a small Lebanese village to Columbia University's PhD program in engineering. A brilliant man who spent years analyzing and structuring traffic patterns for New York City's major tunnels, then gave it up and eventually became an organic farmer in Lebanon.

90 years ago Today : Revolutionary Jatindra Nath died in Bhagat Singh’s lap on 13th September 1929, after 64 days of hunger strike in Lahore jail.

During his stay at Calcutta in 1928, Bhagat Singh had recruited JatindraNath Das, to teach HSRA members on how to make explosives.
The death of Jatindranath Das was a major turning point in the Indian Independence movement.

Lakhs of Indians attended his funeral, as his body was taken from Lahore to Calcutta via train. After this, the British stopped handing over bodies of revolutionaries to their kin.
The members of HSRA & Durga Bhabhi were on the funeral train. When the train stopped at Kanpur, Jawaharlal Nehru paid tributes to Das.

In Calcutta, Netaji Bose led the miles-long funeral procession.

Even then, the Hindu Mahasabha never paid any tributes to Jatin Das.

Stories were from dead and living writers: Elizabeth Bowen, Mary Lavin, Maeve Brennan, Anne Enright, Eimear McBride, Mary Costello, @junecaldwell. There were panels in Brazil, Brussels, London and New York. People came who had long left Ireland but wanted to hear these stories.
Some writers were established, many had won major prizes, others went on to publish debut story collections (@beingvarious, @junecaldwell, Roisín O’Donnell). Stories spoke to each other: Lucy’s to Maeve Brennan; Éilís Ní Dhuibhne to Mary Lavin. June’s pre-dated #Repealthe8th

1/ 100 years ago today, a black teenager named Eugene Williams inadvertently crossed a line separating the black & white sections of a beach in Chicago.

A white beachgoer, insulted, threw rocks, causing Williams to drown.

The event ignited 1 of the U.S.'s bloodiest race riots.
2/ In 1919, tensions in Chicago had been simmering — the city was changing fast and there was fierce competition for jobs and housing.

But Williams' death sparked the city's riots.

When a white policeman refused to arrest the white man who'd caused Williams' death, anger grew.
3/ The tale of Williams' death — and of a distraught black beachgoer who'd fired a gun at police and was then shot dead — angered groups of young white men.

Some drove through Chicago's black neighborhoods, firing at homes or assaulting any black person that crossed their path.

It was 24 years ago today that Pedro Zamora died.
A hard truth is that he’s been gone longer than he was alive. He leaves behind an eternal legacy that still inspires people all over the world as well as a generation of young people who weren’t born when we all came to know him.
We still miss him. I wish he had been to our wedding. I wish he could meet our children. I wish he could have been a father. I wish he could still fight for us. We need heroes.
He’d be proud of what’s been achieved. He’d be enraged with all the injustice.
We fight in his memory.
