One of the beautiful things here is how genuinely delighted all of his competitors appear to be with his accomplishment.
Meritocracy has a bad rep these days.
There are two understandable reasons for that:
1) Many supposedly meritocratic institutions aren't meritocratic.
2) We don't do enough to make sure that those who don't have exceptional talents get to lead decent lives.
But...
People all around the world are celebrating Eliud Kipchoge today. And his competitors freely accept he beat them fair and square.
That's true meritocracy.
