New article on the beliefs, values, and goals of Canadian journalists, drawing on 352 interviews and an international dataset. The take-away: Canada comes out looking pretty good.

First, I was surprised at how close the industry has come to gender parity, though no doubt this obscures major inequity in position, compensation, working conditions, etc.

Also a bit surprised by how middle-of-the-road journalists’ politics are.
Canadian journalists see themselves as occupying a “monitorial” role, focusing on informing the public and explaining current events.
They’re also less likely than journalists elsewhere to perceived themselves to be influenced by government, business, or profit expectations. However, influence from editors, as well as ethical considerations, do weigh considerably.
And promoting tolerance and diversity is an important goal for them, though it is in line with international and peer-country averages.
All in all, Canadian journalists come out looking much better than their US counterparts and a cut above the international average. Of course it’s all self-evaluations and should be handled with care, but still very heartening.
