I want to write a micro-thread on accepting the realities of academic publishing, and how things don't always go the way we want them to. If you have followed me for long enough, you'll know that I try really hard to write every day. It's how I've developed my "writing muscle".
For a very long time, I grew worried that people following me would think "wow, he writes so much and yet where are all those publications on his CV/Google Scholar Citations?" scholar.google.ca/citations?hl=e… well, turns out that publications have a cycle (submitting, reviewing, etc.)
We recently found out that (a) a journal article where I am coauthoring with Saba Siddiki, @tanyaheikkila, @chris_weible @CaliCurley @adeslatte @DCarterSLC and Abby Bennett will be coming out soon in a rather prestigious journal (it's a fantastic contribution to the literature).
(b) a book chapter I coauthored with Andreas Thiel and Liz Baldwin on polycentricity in water governance is ALSO coming out later this year cambridge.org/core/books/gov…
(c) a book chapter I authored for Sultana and Loftus 2019 is ALSO coming out later this year crcpress.com/Water-Politics…
(d) I recently published a journal article on the politics of bottled water, deploying what I believe is one of my most complex and innovative arguments mdpi.com/2073-4441/11/4…
(e) I have 4 manuscripts under R&R, 2 on second set of reviews after first R&R, and 1 book chapter on ethnography as a research method for comparative policy analysis still under development, on top of everything else I've been writing (book chapters, book, conference papers).
THINGS TAKE TIME TO RESEARCH AND WRITE. PUBLISHING TAKES TIME. YOU CAN'T RUSH PUBLICATIONS THROUGH EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO. These are basic tenets of academic publishing a lot of people in academia don't seem to grasp very well. So, my piece of unsolicited advice: DON'T DESPAIR.
And while I've said something about publications, I'll insist, as I've said numerous times (and yes, I often need to remind myself of this): YOU ARE NOT YOUR H-INDEX. You are not your publications. You are worthy because you are you. </end thread>

I am going to share the core, key lessons I have learned in the past 5 months, in a short micro-thread. In doing so, I'll be revealing core elements of my personality as well:
1) PUT YOUR OXYGEN MASK FIRST. - I am a naturally generous person, so much so that I often forget to protect myself before helping others. This has worked much to my detriment in academia, as I often say YES to much service that perhaps I should have said no to. This is important
2) I OWE NOTHING TO NOBODY.- This lesson was a hard one to learn. In trying to be helpful, I often put too much pressure on myself to do things for my institution, my discipline(s), academia in general. I expend much time, energy, resources (often FINANCIAL one$$$).

Brief micro-thread on what's "canon" for me, my students and my research assistants. Anybody who has ever worked with me has learned at the very least the following techniques/software. <begin micro-thread>
To read, synthesize and write, most of my students and RAs learn

1) AIC content extraction (quick skim read)
2) Conceptual Synthesis Excel Dump (citation/readings organization)
3) Citation tracing until reaching conceptual saturation
4) Forward/backward citation tracing.
My students and RAs learn different ways of summarizing their readings:

Ok, my brain was friend 20 minutes ago, I think I still have some energy in me. In response to @besencassino on qualitative methods, here are a few suggestions. Obviously Cresswell, Goertz and @BentFlyvbjerg on case studies, I think we've literally left Yin 1984 behind.
If you want to introduce process tracing and causal case studies, the work of @IRgetsreal Derek Beach, @TheDapperChef is very important (I recognise I am showing my huge political science bias here). BUT, at the same time, I would encourage you to check Field Studies and IJQM.

1.Stop consuming content just for the sake of consuming something. Big companies have deep pockets which means brilliant marketing campaigns. Keeping you sleep deprived and unproductive is making them a fortune-
This doesn’t mean you stop consuming content all together, just don’t watch any and everything that is shoved in your face or just because everyone else is watching it and you want to look cool.

Everyone in the community: "oh my gosh everyone has such terribly high utau standards."

Me: "In a world where there are literally thousands of voicebanks, you need to fight to proclaim people's hearts (and hard drive space)."
People don't want to download a basic/LQ bank anymore, especially considering how little space a lot of users have (because cheap tiny computers are common).

A bank either needs to be good quality to get away with being basic, or have many extras to get away with quality issues.
You can make a low quality bank if you want to, especially if it's mostly for yourself, but so many complain when no one uses their voicebank.

It's supply and demand, there is way too much supply and no demand. People almost always go for the HQ option given no other difference
