It has been evident for a while that administrative burdens are being used to restrict student voting, with the clear intention of benefiting Republicans. New piece in the NY Times highlights this trend. 1/ nytimes.com/2019/10/24/us/…
A benefit of looking at administrative burdens across policy areas is that you see the same threadbare justifications. The claim of "fraud" is a rhetorical fig-leaf, unsupported by evidence, used to strip people of their rights. 2/
In some cases, the justifications for burdening student voters are blandly administrative, hoping to avoid scrutiny of the effects they will cause.
FL: Gee, really sorry if our new parking regulations mean we have to shut down student voting sites! 3/
TX: We are going to require that early voting sites have to be open for 12 days. And if that means that communities such as colleges can't afford to keep their early voting sites open, that is just an unforautne conincidence. 4/
But sometimes the mask drops, and a politician commits a Kinsley gaffe - saying something that is true, but he is not supposed to say.
Most students will not vote for the GOP. It is this, and this alone, that persuades Republicans to limit student access to the ballot. 5/
WI voter ID laws imposed the greatest compliance costs on students. For many, it meant waiting in line to get an ID useful only for voting. Also have to provide documentation of enrollment. Raise the burdens, and some will stay home, and the outcomes of close elections change. 6/
Its hard to tell a both sides story about restricting students voting rights.
The inescapable fact is that one political party is opposed to young people voting because it threatens their power. 7/ nytimes.com/2019/10/24/us/…
