Thread: Going to watch CNN’s coverage of Bernie from 11am to 9 pm tonight. Highlights below
So far, pre-Bernie’s speech CNN keeps trying to explain away Bernie’s impressive crowd size by saying it’s his home field and in one of the most liberal places in the country. Apparently they forgot Bernie drawing people everywhere he went in 2016
Keep saying Bernie is no longer an insurgent. Haha on a side note Bernie went on to "Brooklyn we go hard" as his entrance song, didn’t hear that during the Bernie feed, anyway now CNN showing Bernie’s full speech, so far pretty fair. Played off stage to “Power to the People”
Post speech CNN coverage starting at 1:19, focusing on his personal story from speech but so far pretty fair. And now. Ryan Nobles a bit dismissive of the crowd but otherwise ok. Fredricka Whitfield idiotically compares Bernie’s speech to Hillary’s speeches.
Now pushing the idea that African Americans didn’t support him in 2016, which isn’t actually true, and now talking about Bernie struggling to unite Dem party, no mentions of the actual polls that show his favorable sin Dem party are just as good as anyone else’s in the field.
Wow after a trump segment we have another segment on Bernie, must be a special day. We got Wesley Lowery from WaPo who seems pretty positive despite host Fredricka Whitfield continuing to be a bit dismissive. We also have Toluse Olorunnipa also from WaPo, analysis seems fine.
Finally we have historian Tim Naftali tho he gets asked about and talks about Trump. He then pivots back to Bernie and tries to draw relation between Trump and Bernie as both being disrupters but overall coverage is ok. Interesting that CNN had 2 out of 3 people from WaPo tho.
Now 2 pm hour and already CNN has bumped Bernie into their B segment because they can’t go more than a couple of hours without leading with Trump, focusing on the personal part of his speech once again, they also focus on him calling trump out, and after just a 4 min segment
They then pivot to covering Booker, Warren, and of course Kamala. When Kamala announced she essentially got wall to wall coverage for the first few hours afterwards. CNN now just ran a segment of the Bush Dynasty that was longer than their Bernie coverage from this hour....
And that’s apparently if for the 2 pm hour as they close their show going after Rep. Omar instead. I’ll have more later but for now I’m already caught up. Msnbc time now.
MSNBC starting at noon as I can’t bring myself to watch AM Joy. We start with some Bernie pre speech coverage which for some reason they’ve assigned Beth Fouhy to cover despite her being a bit of a Bernie hater. Probably not a great sign. And she’s already saying questionable
Things. Anyway after 3 minutes we are off to trump coverage. Now we have our first horrendous coverage of the day with MSNBC doing s panel partly on Bernie with Zerlina Maxwell as the Democrat against the Republican talking head. No mention that she is a former Clinton
Surrogate who hates Bernie about as much as she hates Trump. Maxwell does her best to hide her disdain, while the republican talking head idiotically compares Bernie to Klobuchar and first calls him an establishment candidate but later says Bernie has no shot as he’s too far
Too the left and then within 20 more secs says Bernie scares him because he’s too close to Trump in the polls. Guy contradicted himself twice within 20 secs of opening his mouth. Its Rick Tyler btw. Going to be hard for anyone to give more contradiction analysis than that
Just awful.
Wow, someone actually talked to a Bernie person next as Senior Advisor for Bernie 2020 Chuck Rocha gets interviewed. Pretty good segment. Some concern trolling questions from the host but this Rocha guy is doing a good job.
MSNBC does a good job showing Bernie’s entire speech without interruptions, afterwards they have a panel w the same 2 panelists a before Zerlina Maxwell and Rick Tyler as well as 2 other panelists whose names I didn’t catch. Zerlina at least prefaces her statements this time by
Pointing out that she worked for Hillary but then proceeds to be the hater we know her to be as she calls Bernie out for allegedly not mentioning race or gender until the 23rd minute of the speech. She pushes the false narrative that AA Women don’t support him. Next we have
Rick Tyler who also craps all over Bernie’s speech. So far MSNBC’s panel has only talked down his speech. Could have been mistaken for a Fox News panel. Next we get to hear from Fouhy again.
She pumps up the crowd and speaks to the diversity of the crowd. Also pushes back a little against Maxwell’s smears, better than I expected from her, next we have Laura Basset who they didn’t seem to identify properly as they didn’t say what paper she was from and she’s fairly
Positive. Finally we get jay newton small who they once again don’t tell us who she works for, apparently it’s Time Magazine and Bloomberg. Not a strong slant either way from her.
And that’s it for Bernie coverage for the hour as the rest of the time is all Trump stuff. Next we have the 2 pm hour where they also focus on Ttump for the whole first half hour before finally getting to Bernie. We get another panel and upon the first wide shot I already know
I’m not going to like it. First we get Fouhy again and I give her credit for citing Bernie’s entrance song as well as being relatively fair in her coverage, but then we go to a 3 person panel of a Ny Times reporter whose name I didn’t catch, the former chief of staff to Mike Lee
And the person who I knew at first glance was going to make the segment insufferable Bernie hater Tiffany Cross. First we have this Ozzy guy from The NY Times whose name I could write if MSNBC bothered to actually present their panelists names on screen and he’s pretty neutral
Next we have Cross who does a better job of hiding her disdain for Bernie at first before going in on her predictable smearing of him with AA voters but thankfully she only talks for a minute or so. Finally we have Boyd Mathesom whose name MSNBC actually manages to put on screen
He’s trying to start crap about the DNC getting rid of caucuses before cluelessly stating Bernie will pivot away in General. Interestingly the host Kendis Gibson who I’ve always seen as a Bernie hater himself clearly thinks the segment wasn’t negative enough
So before ending the panel he brings up the private jet smears. So far neither MSNBC or CNN has managed to actually have a progressive on one of their panels with MSNBC’s coverage being worse overall Imo
3pm MSNBC starts with Bernie again as I begin to fatigue from watching their bad/repetitive coverage. Fouhy yet again saying basically the same stuff as she said the last few hours which begs the question why they kept bringing her in live, that said she’s fine in her coverage
Next we have another panel with names basically nowhere to find on screen so I might get a name wrong, we have former Hillary for America spokesperson Josh something who is actually surprisingly positive, next we have a Republican strategist Rena Shaw who is very dismissive and
Almost as clueless as Rick Tyler from earlier, she calls Bernie out of touch and low stamina and too old. Just absurd commentary. Next we got Dem. strategies Aisha Moodie-Mills who is fairly neutral and not given enough time to speak.
Just an idea but if you are going to have a panel maybe don’t have more people on than minutes you are willing to give the whole panel. And the host Kendis Gibson continues to stoke divisiveness. The former Hillary person shuts it down tho and I’m less surprised after he
Mentions that he now works with pro-Bernie people. They then move on to coverage of other Dems before covering Trumo up thru 4 pm.
Back to CNN at 3 pm we get Bernie coverage in the B segment again, with Axelrod being interviewed about it and starting by saying there’s still “ouchiness” about Bernie’s treatment in 2016 before pivoting to Warren less than a minute after the segment begins.
He then talks for several minutes about Joe Biden before CNN and he start pushing Beto down our throats some more w him spending more time on all 3: Warren, Biden, and Beto then on Bernie as apparently 3 pm is when CNN decided they could start ignoring Bernie again which is
What they usually do anyway. Having finished the hour up to 4 pm, I can say that CNN”s 3 pm coverage was absurd with them covering Bernie for a total of 1 minute and only to give him a hard time for saying he’s not looking for Hillary’s advice. Essentially a Bernie Blackout here
4 pm hour on CNN and during B segment they actually cover Bernie for more than 1 minute, tho someone needs to explain to CNN that in a field w 20 candidates Bernie will win if he gets the same numbers as he did last time as they seem not to get this fact. Also still only 3 mins
Of coverage as there seems to be a definite shift in coverage since Ana Cabrera began hosting at 3 pm as in her two hours of programming Bernie only got 4 mins of coverage combined.
Alright last hour of CNN I’m doing, 5 pm, we get an actual segment in the A block w Keith Boykins and SE Cupp tho it quickly turns from being about Bernie to instead being about criticizing Warren.
The Bernie portion lasts less than 2 minutes. So in 3 hrs of Ana Cabrera hosting we get a pathetic 6 mins of coverage
And with that we move back to 4 pm and 5 pm on MSNBC which is the last stuff I’m covering as in case anyone forgot cable news is awful and painful to watch nonstop. So we get another live Beth Fouhy spot where she says the same thing that she has said each of the least 4-5 hours
Once again in the B segment which is followed by Bernie hater Basil Smikle who actually get his name written on the screen and almost immediately starts pushing talking points against Bernie and is certainly not a Bernie supporter as apparently MSNBCcant be bothered to put a
Pro Bernie person on any of their panels covering him today. Basil doesn’t go to overboard as he admits Bernie has some appeal. He’s followed by Susan Del Precious who is a Republican strategist whose contribution is name dropping Larry David
After that they pivot to Jay Inslee who has been getting the Klobuchar treatment of getting a lot of tv time despite polling next to 0. The rest of the hour is Trump related w even DWS getting interviewed and a couple minutes on immigration
Which brings us to PolitcsNation at 5 pm and before anything else I’m struck at Al Sharpton’s TelePrompTer reading struggles. Anyway we get 35 minutes of terrible programming about Trump including an interview w Omorosa for some reason before Bernie is finally brought up
And the segment is awful as it’s arguably the worst booking of any show yet w Adrianne Elrod a Hillary surrogate from 2016 who is a Bernie hater positioned as the Democratic strategist and Joe Watkins a Republican talking head. It will be interesting to see who Smears Bernie more
And we start with the false assumption that you have to be moderate to win in a General. Elrod actually says with a straight face
that “There are a lot of voters who want someone new.... except (same voters also say they) really like Joe Biden because Biden is the person (who could beat Trump)" in other words she’s saying Bernie is too old but age doesn’t count for Biden and then she cites
Polling despite the fact that polls she is referencing also have Bernie right st the top. The Republican strategist also spends the segment pumping up Joe Biden, who everyone under the age of 50 knows has no shot. The segment only mentions Bernie for about a minute
As the show like a few others from today seem to be using Bernie’s rally as an excuse to talk about 2020 without really talking much about Bernie.
And unlike w CNN I don’t have to choose not to watch any more MSNBC programming from today as despite being considered 24 hour cable news, MSNBC stops airing the news at 6 pm on Saturdays and instead shows repeats from last night and episodes of Dateline.
In conclusion, when it comes to the “liberal” media’s coverage of Bernie day of his first rally for 2020 each channel has their own strategy.
Within the first hour or two of Bernie’s rally they both cover Bernie a bit but after that you get CNN w essentially more of a Bernie Blackout and MSNBC w what at first glance looks like more consistent coverage of Bernie, however it’s all people who don’t support Bernie
Either smearing him or trying to pretend to be neutral despite not liking him but no actual Bernie supporters/surrogates speaking on his behalf. Either way you have a blackout of Bernie supporters and discussions on actual policies and instead
Have pointless discussions by people who think Joe Biden actually has a chance and probably thought Jeb Bush was a shoe in to run against Hillary in 2016
Btw I originally said I would do CNN thru 9 pm but they have a couple of pre recorded shows that definitely won’t touch on today’s news so I’m calling it now for my own sanity.
