Earlier this month I read David Futrelle's article in response to writer Liz Bruenig's tweets on the Incel movement. While I generally enjoy his work, I felt he was somewhat dismissive and over critical of Bruenig's thought process.

I have observed several things over the years regarding the RedPill/Incel phenomenon and so after reading Futrelle's post I felt compelled to talk more about some of what I've learned about the men who are attracted to this subculture.
And to gently suggest that publicly rebuking a writer who is not trolling but trying to make sense of horrifying phenomenon is not really the most productive way to approach this discussion on social media.

There are certain types of boy or young man that initially engages with the incel community because of the allure of the incredibly complex mind fuck *behind* all the hatred of and desire to subjugate women.

Many of these men will help their movement by creating traffic, parroting their propaganda, mentoring younger men & making Memes. They also intentionally target potential martyrs.

They have been venerated & romanticized precisely because a certain % of the socially isolated & sexually disenfranchised; think taking revenge, striking terror in the hearts of others and shaping the Internet & ultimately meat space to fit their worldview is fucking based. 
And the societal terror that it provokes is the most desirable outcome for the Alt-Right since the fears that these attacks exploit are used to reinforce the sanctity of their worldview.

Though it may seem counterinuative, many who get sucked into the RedPill/Incel mindset feel they have been denied oportunities fo heroism & meaning in their lives. It is part of the appeal. They're being taught that the source of their rage & anguish is a direct attack

Once you've married your identity w/ certain beliefs it's impossible to go back to the person u were before. Even if you wholeheartedly denounce something u once fervently believed, you remain forever changed by the process through which u explored and embraced that ideology.

Refusal to engage w/ them or listen to their grievances when it is essential to disproving them is ultimately alienating them further.
