I never thought I will tell this for a #Vijay-#Atlee movie, but I ended up liking #Bigil. One of the main reasons is the characterization of Rayappan ( older Vijay) and how Vijay approaches this role. (1)
In the best scene in #Bigil, Rayappan tries to convince Sharma(Jackie Shroff) to pick his son for the football team and explains how a son doesn't have to suffer for his father's doing. Atlee has a tendency to go overboard at time. But there was a subtlness and restraint here.(2)
Vijay on the other hand shines in perhaps his first really different role that he has done in a long while, bringing in variations in both body language and mannerisms. Atlee's writing once again takes inspirations from lot of movies, but there is an improvement this time (3)
His pacing is his USP. The police station scene where the inspector tells Vijay the reasons with which he could charge and arrest him, but then how Vijay uses the same reasons to find a way out is perhaps the best mass scene Atlee has written and executed in his career.(4)
The stadium and football scenes have all come out lot better than what I expected after the trailer. Nayanthara's presence might be unnecessary , but all the women in the football team have done a neat job. A.R Rahman's songs are passable with only Maathare standing out.(5)
There are flaws. There are cliches. In a movie dedicated to women, Vijay beats the woman team in a 1x11 match by 3 goals ( seriously what !). But still the postives outweigh negatives. Yogi Babu asks Vijay who takes a chain to beat the bad guys - "Isn't this an old technique?"(6)
Vijay replies-" But it will work. There is minimum guarantee". That is Atlee speaking to his audience there. Atlee hasn't made a really great movie still. But he hasn't made a really bad one either. He might have just moved on from average to decent now. Bigil is entertaining (7)
